NewBee to Aladdin 5 chipset: Do I need MoBo drivers / Which ones

I am about to help a friend do a clean Windows install an ASUS P5A MoBo, and put a K6-2+ 450 CPU on it.
I have never worked with an Ali chipset and know nothing about which drivers are needed for Win98 and/or Win2k.
ASUS only shows the IDE Busmaster driver drivers.
ALI shows Nothbridge and Southbridge drivers.
With Win98 and Win2000 which ALI drivers are needed for the Aladdin 5 chipset on the P5A MoBo?
All help appreciated,
Herkulese

I'd install ALi's AGP drivers, and leave the IDE alone - ALi say Microsoft's drivers are OK to use.

regards, Peter

I installed all of the drivers available at ALi's website. For Win2k, you might not need anything. For Win98, you should definitely install the northbridge drivers to enable AGP and to generally improve performance. The IDE drivers should also add a little more performance.

You're supposed to use them, but I don't on my p5a in win98. They just seem to screw things up and make things slower.

Thanks for the information.

Would the correct Ali drivers for the P5A be those labeled as follows?

Northbridge - M1541 / M1542
Southbridge - M1543

What is the proper procedure for installing them?

Thanks again,
Herkulese

Under Win98 and Win2K, the only driver that you need is the AGP driver.

You may want to install the IDE Drivers, but these are not essential. Most of the time you are better off sticking with Win98's drivers. ALi says that you should only install the ALi drivers if you encounter problems with the default Microsoft drivers.

Andi Hui,

Thanks for the links. I downloaded the AGP and IDE drivers that you suggested.

I notice that the IDE driver is different from what ASUS has and I found no Specifid AGP or IDE driver at ALI.

Where do these come from and is this IDE driver better than the aliide34.zip version that I already have?

Thanks again,
Herkulese

Thanks for the links.
It turns out that I had most of these files already, but it is good to see confirmation.

What is the difference between the Win2k IDE driver and the Win98/Win2k IDE driver?
What is the AGP Utility (agp_utility_140.zip)?

thanks
Herkulese

Not sure what the differences are between the IDE drivers; might just be updated versions.

AGP Utility lets you set things like AGP speed and other timings.
