Ok so you used bandwith and power and send it somewhere... for what purpose? Can someone gimme a real quick rundown of what its really about? Is there an actual goal besides using more bandwidth then another team?

They're analyzing radio signals to find life in other galaxies and solar systems.

Eh? Thats kinda weird.... any luck yet?
Yeah, they found alien life forms broadcasting radio signals last year, but it never really made it to the news wires.

;)

Trust me, if there's any 'luck' you'll hear about it.

Better off doing something useful, like folding@home or United Device's Cancer research.

SETI supporters are just as weird as the fundamentalist Christians who think Jesus is coming back this year.

That's not true! I saw this documentary called "Cantact" that told all about these aliens that sent us the plans for a spaceship! It even had Bill Clinton in it giving a speech about it. I guess the CIA kept it pretty quiet though.

People, let's not turn this into a bash a particular DC thread. We've had enough of those and really, "to each his/her own" regarding which project you choose. We're all TeAmmates here :D

But to answer the question, the SETI project is not a waste of bandwidth/cpu cycles. Besides the obvious goal of trying to find life outside our solar system, the project is telling us a lot about the universe. Charting new stars and learning more about how the universe ticks. So it's not a useless project (as over 4 million members can attest to).

Of course, I'm not the most impartial on this subject(look at sig) hehe ;)

Some of like the TeAmwork, TeAmmates and the pure fun of stats. Some people like guns, sports, cars....I love this TeAm....my PC's crunching away.....and the STATS! :)

I love the excitement of races.......great sportsmanship........the helpful people here.

Sure, there's science involved......and, while it SHOULD be the most important, it isn't always the case. :)

Why do people play football? Why do people collect baseball cards? Why do people upgrade their PC's very often (to crunch faster of course).

In this place...it's the TeAm! :D

Try toasting marshmellows, without dripping on the fan.

I am here in NC piedmont huddled around my seti cruncher keeping warm. Sure hope we don't lose the power..............................:frown:

Seriously:

I like to think there is enough projects to go around. I got started on SETI because of it's prominence, and the SETI TeAm made it look appealing. Besides, there is something adventurous about helping explore the universe. Now, when we reach some sort of milestone with SETI I am sure some of us will explore other opportunities. (I have thought Genome@Home might be a likely canidate) BUT, first things first. I want to see this project to the next plateau.

(insert emotion for determined here)
