Newb question about RAID

Can someone explain what RAID is and what it does? I only have a slight, general idea of it. Also, what are the different raid types (raid 0, raid 1, raid 0+1) ?

RAID 0 uses two drives in tandem. Every file is split evenly between the two drives. The drives can tehrefore read and write simultaneously. RAID 1 writes identical information to two drives. If one drive fails, the other drives takes it's place without you even having to restart your system. RAID 0+1 requires 4 drives. It does RAID 0 on two drives. Then, it copies both of those drives on another two drives. RAID 0 is for pure performance. RAID 1 is for data integrity. RAID 0+1 is for both.

So how much space do I get if I use, say 2 x 20GB hard drives with raid 0? Do I get 20GB of space or 40GB of space? Also, how much of a performance improvement is seen with this setup over an identical HD without raid?

Ok, i have also been thinking about raid and have the same question about the space. And I was wondering if it would be better to get a mobo with raid on it or just get a raid PCI card. I was thinking that the PCI card would be better because then i could go though many mobo's and not have to worry about getting a raid one.

two 20gb drives in a raid 0 config will give you 40gb. Performance of offboard vs onboard and stripe size etc are very complicated. I would suggest that you learn to use the SEARCH button as this information is all over the forum.
