Iceberg photographed at the north end of Macquarie Island, south-west of New Zealand.

A massive iceberg -- more than twice the size of New York's Manhattan island -- is drifting slowly toward Australia, scientists said Wednesday.

In November, an iceberg estimated to be 500 meters wide and 50 meters high was spotted close to Macquarie Island in the southern Pacific drifting towards New Zealand.

Scientists working on the island were astounded by its size.

"We pulled out the binoculars that we use for work on the seals and, sure enough, it was a huge floating island of ice basically and, yeah, it was an incredible sight," Australian researcher Dean Miller told CNN affiliate TVNZ.

Get a tug and direct those decent size bergs into Saudi Arabia.

Anchor it offshore and run a pipeline from the berg to shore

sorry Hulu is fail as its only available to America >< Naughty Hulu!

Figures. I just found out that it is only a preview video anyways. Not a full show. I was actually looking for one that I saw a while back where they went through the history of the planet all the way back from its creation through the different ages(detailing the weather)

I can't find it on hulu. I wish this thing was organized better.

They say it's 140 square km

500 m wide

How long does that make it? I tried to figure it out and got a ridiculous answer... can someone else give it a shot?

140,000 m^2

500m wide.

140,000 M^2/500m = 280 m

😛 :awe:

Jesus, am I like the only math savant on ATOT?

Or am I a math retard?

Yeah, it's easier to think about if you say 500m = 0.5km

Then you know it's 140 square km

It's 0.5 km wide

So it must be 280 km long

WTF?

I'm assuming one or more of those figures is wrong.

Giant sausage shaped island threatens to penetrate New Zealand! Terrified citizens shed their wool and flee to Australia.

Oh, I think I get it now...

There's a huge one (140 km^2) that's not actually near New Zealand that broke off in 2000 and parts of it are breaking off and floating up to New Zealand that are as large as 200m long.

I've looked at several parallel articles and this is the only one that mentions the "twice the size of Long Island" bit as being actually close to New Zealand.
