A few friends of mine decided a great gift for another friend would be spinner rims. he had an older toyota corolla and they went to his house the night before his Birthday and installed cheap plastic spinner attachments for his rims.

it was hilarious since he didn't take them off for a couple of weeks, and he drove around with them. Said people laughed at him and honked their horns at him all the time. Makes me laugh to think about it :)

I just don't see the logic behind such a law.
Sometime last year or the year before there was a lawsuit where someone had claimed that they were involved in an accident because it confused them... couldn't tell if that vehicle was moving or not. I don't have specifics, but I can tell you this, very often it is the rim of a vehicle on a side street that I look at to determine if they are about to pull out ahead of me. It's not a sure-fire way to do it, but to me it's the easiest way. That's all I'm arguing. (Sadly that is required in this particular response)

IIRC it was a lawmaker who got in a crash. Up north... somewhere. :)

Yay for pointless laws!

I thought NY already had CA beat on pointless laws.

Most of the time I hear about a state protecting its citizens from their own stupidity, it's California.

I wonder why I haven't heard of any recently.. maybe I'm oblivious to what happens in my own state. :( All I keep hearing about are NY ones.. trans fat, crossing streets with iPods, and now spinners.

AWESOME.

OK, so it's a perfect example of what's wrong with every legislature in this country. But still, at least they're worthless, corrupt, and tasteful.

You picked three recent examples, two of which aren't even laws - they're just pending legislation. New York is just playing catch-up to California.

I just think that those rims are funny as hell. They may be a little annoying but, we really don't need a law banning them. After enough people use them so that they become way too common they will become uncool and eventually abandoned. I say, just let the fad fade away on its own.

I think they're stupid and all, and they are somewhat of a very *minor* hazard, but I wouldn't go as far as to ban them.

Besides, theyre so played out now, you barely ever see them anymore.

Some people get into wrecks because they don't know how to turn left at a green light. Either there was oncoming traffic that they didn't see, or someone behind them didn't realize that they were stopped with their blinker on (or not, as the case may be). Maybe we should ban left turns; after all, there's nothing stopping you from making three consecutive right turns instead.

The state's job is NOT to coddle those too imbecilic to make it in the real world.

NY is smart... by passing legislation like this, the idiots leave the state and go elsewhere, like California

If you like this sort of legislation so much, go live in Singapore. They even have laws requiring you to wash your car every so often:)

What I'm more concerned about are cars with lifts on one side only. Like, the left side of the car is 1' higher than the right side. Have you guys seen these cars yet?

SEMA have put out a call-to-arms for owners of old Corsicas and other vehicles that frequently have "spinner" hubcaps perpetrated upon them. The State Legislature in New York have introduced a bill to prohibit the sale and use of "hubcaps which contain parts designed to continue moving when the motor vehicle to which they are attached is not moving", with fines ranging from $150 to $750 for repeat offenders. This may be one of the few instances short of a DUI where the fine is greater than the retail price of the vehicle involved. While not agreeing with the principle of the bill, this editor can't really argue with the outcome.

Ok, this is totally unrelated to the story, but...

Is the author of that article from England? He's using plural verbs after collective nouns. In the US, we usually treat collective nouns as singular, and use a singular verb after them. In the UK, they treat them as plural.

Example: In the US we say, "Sony is planning to introduce...", while in England they'd say, "Sony are planning to introduce..."

The author used plural verbs after both "SEMA" and "The State Legislature"

And on another unrelated note: What is wrong with me? Why do I care?

When they pull up to a stop sign or light it looks like the car is still moving and not actually stopping. People look at the wheels a lot of times to make sure the car is going to stop and it can cause wrecks because the drivers slam on their brakes to prevent a wreck from happening.
Exactly. The human eye is attracted to motion. You see the rims moving out of the corner of your eye and think "oh, time to go".....and you're wrong. I've done it a couple of times...I caught myself and then swore at the snapperhead who had the rims.

You made the quote nonsensical with poor punctuation. Try:

"My rims never spin; to the contrary, you'll find that they are quite stationary."

is the Pimp My Ride show out in California ? How they let cars with flailing parts drive about freely on the streets is beyond me. Why is there no inspection out there ?

Taking care of your car, even keeping it looking nice, is not a bad thing. People buy $60k cars and never wash it (blackened front rims on their beemers, etc.)... amazing.

I hate spinners and I always wear my seatbelt. But I think this proposal for law would be an unnecessary limit to our freedoms, same as the seatbelt law (which I wouldn't say if it was restricted to buckling up your children), and countless other dumb laws people have dreamed up.
