a 19yr old university student @ fordham university (NYC) faces genuine jail time for one of the msot bizarre extortion charges we will likely see in a US court.
the accused man supposedly held a BB gun to a fellow students head and demanded 4.7billion runescape gold transferred to his character

apparently the accused seen here:

attempted to first buy the gold off the student using what appeared to be fake US tender. when he got called out on his counterfeits he proceded to brandish a BB gun and threatend violence if the individual didnt make the 4.7billion in-game currency transaction. the victim later went to the police and now the accused faces 15 years in the slammer
dualshock has more:

lol. How would this even be accomplished? I thought Runescape heavily regulated the way trading works. I mean, obviously X could give Y a password to the account containing all the gold, but that wouldn't bring 4.7billion to Y's main account.

Armed robbery is a very serious and mentally scarring matter. Victims can be left with serious psychological trauma, and if their acute stress reaction is not resolved, PTSD.

Anxiety and panic attacks for years to come because some jackass wanted your digital gold? 15 years is a steal (no pun intended) when compared to the potentially lifelong mental trauma he inflicted.

So around 2000-2500 dollars. Wow, that's a lot of dough.

Yup, especially for kids that age. People get killed over $500 when it comes to legal/ilegal transactions, which is why I don't trade/buy computer parts locally, only online. There are far too many desperate drug addicts out there in the middle of a run who would gladly steal your shit for a fix. Is it possible that he was desperate and wanted money for a fix? High quality heroin is said to flood NYC, maybe he needed some cash for some drugs?

But seriously, 15 years? Seems a little overkill there for a video game related crime.

I disagree. This crime was as every bit "real" as robbing a convenience store. It doesn't matter who you rob or what you steal, but how you do it.

If you hold a gun (even a BB gun) to someone's head and make them fear for their life over their runescape gold, you're just as guilty as doing the same to a liquor store clerk over their register.

You say some incredibly naive things, but this tops them all.
If someone shot somebody over playing chess, would it be any less of a crime than shooting someone during a bank robbery?
Should shooting someone while stealing a nickel be a lesser crime than shooting someone while stealing $1,000?
What about shooting someone for no reason? Should you just get off completely?

Most murderers don't even get that much time, why should some kid with a BB gun (it will hurt but not kill) get that much? I don't really care, it's your tax dollars, just find it silly how the US justice system can be so inconsistent.

Oh, really? Do you have some stats to support that claim?

The most classic case is probably OJ Simpson. He only got time after stealing a baseball card or something like that. All the cases of cops killing people for no reason, such as the BART shooting. They are people too and should be treated the same way under the law. Then there's that judge who beat his daughter, nothing was ever done to him. I don't really keep track of every single news article I read so I don't even know what to search for, but there have been plenty of articles posted over the years of murder/violence/sex acts where nothing was done. There's also that bus beheading, but think that was in Canada. It's not really any better here when it comes to justice.

All I'm pointing out is, it's silly to get that much time over a video game related act. It's your tax dollars at work.

Small little problem. OJ was found innocent. It's considered bad form to lock people up after they have been found innocent.

Nah, he just makes things up and has zero common sense.
I am still not sure if he's a troll or just stupid.

Yup. I have NO idea how he survives in daily life.
He's the Tweakboy of the OT forum.

Convicted murderers get more time than that.
Of course, by your logic (RS) all accused murderers don't because they aren't convicted.
Using OJ as an example is ridiculous, if he were convicted he most likely would have been given life (25 year minimum) or death.
