New York Becomes Only State to Offer Free Four-Year College Tuition

Sure to piss off all the conservatives who will feel pissed that their tax dollars might be paying for "those people" to go to college. That and the "if ain't STEM it ain't education" crowd.

New York will be the only state in the country to cover four-year college tuition for residents after the program was included in the budget package approved Sunday night.

The state's Excelsior Scholarship program will be rolled out in tiers over the next three years, starting with full coverage of four-year college tuition this fall for students whose families make less than $100,000.

The income cap will increase to $110,000 in 2018 and $125,000 in 2019.

"With this budget, New York has the nation's first accessible college program. It's a different model," said Governor Andrew Cuomo Saturday in a statement. "Today, college is what high school was—it should always be an option even if you can't afford it."

Pisses me off because I am sending my son to a good small private college, the kind that Cuomo wants to see go away. Hopefully he can finish before Cuomo kills all but SUNY schools

My state has (or at least had) a program that paid tuition for a 4 year degree., but you did have to maintain a minimum GPA (the requirement was pretty low). I think it should be limited to only STEM degrees.

I'm not sure if my state had income restrictions, but if a program like this is going to be offered I do not agree with any income restrictions.

I don't have kids, why am I paying taxes towards the local schools? Oh, that's right, it's because I'm not a fucking idiot and know that a better educated populace is better for everyone.

Better educated in what? So a political science major is a great benefit to society? Maybe they should offer free training in a trade. I would argue that having better trained plumbers, electricians, stone masons, etc is better for society than an English Lit major.

Anyone wanna' take bets on how long this lasts before it explodes in bankruptcy or bureaucratic breakdown? One year? Two? Place 'yer bets! 😀

Better educated in everything, do you know there's a direct correlation between music and doing well in math?
Better educated is just that, better educated, allows to think beyond the bubble you seem to be stuck in.

Missing link: you need to study music AND math to get that benefit. Music alone won't improve one's math beyond the basics.
gonna go with DUH.
studying music doesn't magically make you better at something you don't study, but I was pointing out that your fellow fuckwit thinks free education should be only applied to trade training. I think that's astoundingly wrong, and short-sighted.
To quote ME... "Doing well in math" clearly implies you'd be in a math class and benefit from music theory.
goddamn... 🙄

I for one love it. And I'll be taking advantage of it since I live in New York.

Been meaning to get a 2nd degree for a while.

Doesn't hurt that I'm a New Yorker and have been for the last 39 years. Fuck all you conservatards.

It was unspoken and had a 50-50 chance you either meant "study music full time" or "study both".
I just covered that base before you did. And with less snark. 😉

Big difference here.

And who made up the arbitrary 125K a year mark?

125K doesn't go very far in certain parts of NY such as LI or Westchester.

Perhaps we could apply the same logic to free housing, or food, or internet service.

If people want to be better educated, they should pay for it at their expense. Putting the whole of tuition on the backs of the taxpayer doesn't magically make education "free".

You do have to take 30 hrs a year and remain in NY working for the same number of years you receive the aid.

LMAO. people live in LI making less than 20k a year.

You're talking about filthy rich in comparison.

Glad to see your extensive education in English is really paying off. I did not say that free education should only apply to trades, so your reading comprehension sucks and you are the reason for not wanting to pay for free public education. If you wish to ask taxpayers to fund free education, it should be in degrees or trades that have an actual societal benefit. Can't wait to have a zillion Elizabeth Warren types earning $$$$$ being professors.

yea, that's exactly why people want to be teachers or professors, it's all about the $$$$$...

You certainly implied it should only be in trades and in ones you deem worthy.

well if you're really the christian individual you claim to be, you know the answer to the first two

I don't think Christ advocated that governments force person A to pay for person B's education, house, or food.

I do recall him charging each individual to be charitable of their own volition.

I love how I went to college when interest rates were near their highest, took out loans to pay for that education, graduated when unemployment was near it's highest, and am finally about to pay off the rest of my loans this year.

But now I get to pay for other people's college...

If K-12 children or their parents want them to be better educated, they should pay for it at their expense then too I assume, correct?

If not, why is this different?
