shouldn't be law, should be per place of preformance....that enforces it and does fines and such, much simpler that way, that way when people buy the tickets and what not, that's part of the rules
If it isn't a law then how can you charge a fine?

I guess that I will not be attending any performances in NY.

I keep my phone on silent at the movies and such but With two lids at home I want the sitter to be able to contact me if need be.

Cell phone use would still be permitted at sporting events and in emergencies

How do I know it's an emergency if I have it turned off?

museums, libraries and galleries

That seems a bit harsh, I dont want a ticket for having my phone ring at a museum.

Sounds like a way to make some quick cash, how about just tacking on a fine for jwalking with a cell

They do nd I use mine. However Talking on the phone is illegal.

This should be up to the bussiness and they can reserve the right to ask you to leave if they feal you are being disruptive.

I think this proposed law is overexcessive too. I mean, if it were just movies/concert halls/plays, that would be fine. But to have to think about the entire list of places you can't go to with a ringing cell phone is too much. Don't get me wrong, I hate when other people talk on phones when they shouldn't be, but to have to actively keep thinking about your phone is ridiculous. I can just imagine the list growing as more people think of more places to ban them. It'll become a joke.

I agree with letting the particular location have rules against this. PUT UP EFFECTIVE SIGNS to warn people. Think about it. How much LESS EFFECTIVE would this be? Who would be giving out the tickets even if it's a national law? Certainly not the ushers nor librarians. You're going to have worse interruptions handing out a ticket or even locating the person with the damn phone in any kind of crowd.

I think it's sad we need a law for it. What they should do, is allow people to take the person who's phone/pager is going off, take them out back, and beat them.

I'm all for this law and all but what about doctors or firefighters or whoever else might legitimately need a pager?
or organ recipients

I'm, sure they are during some exams... cause your phone is another place to put answers.

So what you are trying to say is you don't like my phones ringer doing a rendition of something like "Fur Elise" when the performers are doing it too?

Like someone already said... you don't know if it's an emergency unless you answer the phone. And talking on them isn't allowed in the first place. Yeah, good thinking by the law makers.

So you get up out of your seat, walk to the lobby, and answer the phone.

Wow, how long does your phone ring before they give up ? I've never seen anyone sprint out of a theatre to answer their phone either.

how about pick up

tell them to wait for a minute softly

i dont think anyone would bust your chops for doing this

also every cell phone i know of has caller id so you can call them back a minute later

i wonder how some people got by before without their cell phones

i have one yes but it is on vibrate 90% of the time

if i have to talk i will usually go somewhere where it will not bother someone else

Most docs carry a pager when they're on call... I know a few that don't carry a cell and yet *amazingly* they get by. 😛
Besides, if it is an emergency then you prolly should rush out of the theater/venue anywho.

If I'm in the middle of a movie, dinner, driving, etc and I get a call... I don't pickup until later. And also, there's this amazing invention called voicemail... so you can leave your phone off and still get back to whomever called.

None of this addresses how you will know if it's an emergency or not unless you answer the phone right away or carry a vibrating pager (most of us aren't doctors and still have potential emergencies). I am only pushing this because these great lawmakers are saying it's okay to pick up / talk only if it's an emergency.

Uh, most paging services will lett you enter the #, followed by *911 to indicate that you have an emergency.

Alright, this is getting nowhere. I know what a pager is capable of. I said unless you have a pager (which you have to put on vibrate also) ... or pick up the phone and talk... you won't even know it's an emergency... and think that it's okay to talk.

Just do what i would do.Ignore the law. What will they do give u a $50 ticket.Don't think so.Also as soon as ticket given to someone aclu willl be called in and this law would be challanged in court and found unconstitutional. So i don't see them enforcing the law unless they want the court to strike it down.
