And released a day earlier then expected......

Xbox Live owners can now download the next chapter of Sam Fisher's adventures.

Though a new mission for Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell was originally scheduled for release tomorrow, GameSpot has confirmed that it is available a day early and can now be downloaded via the Xbox Live service. Before downloading the level, players first download a small patch for the Xbox Live software, after which they are returned to the Splinter Cell title screen. From there, players may log in with their Xbox Live accounts and proceed to download the new Kola Cell level, which weighs in at just under 2,000 memory blocks and takes approximately two minutes to receive over an average broadband connection. The level is then available from the game's level-select menu and is listed at the very end.

Even if there was, you probably wouldn't want to make that massive download over a 56K line. AFAIK there would have to be some way to convert ethernet -> phone jack and modify the software as well. Doesn't seem possible.

Too bad about this expansion too-- I *just* sold my Splinter Cell. :(

While we're on the subject of bandwidth constraints... would XBL be worthwhile with a capped upstream? I think I'm at 18KBps max (~144kbps). Downstream I'm more than fine...

Supposedly XBox Live! is playable with a 56k modem....looks like I'm going to be heading to Target tonight to pick up a Live! kit to see how this works out :)

Target?? ;p

If you were/are working later tonight I'll stop by there. Oh and just in case it doesn't work, I don't how your return policy compares to that of Tarjay's :)

BTW - is that hot asian chick still working there? ;)

Yes, the good looking asian chick is still working there (though not tonite) :p Return policy is 7 days if defective, with reciept :) On second thought, you might want to pick that up from Target.

Damn I just lost all reason to go by your store tonight ;) jk of course. Seeing as how I'm not sure it will work, I'll probably stick with Target for the moment unless something pops up. Think of it this way - if this does work you can sell Live! kits to schmucks still stuck on 56k, so I'm indirectly helping your budget :)

XBox Live! DOES work with 56k! Took me 5 hours to figure it out but it does work! I haven't tried online gaming yet but its supposed to be alright since most games are P2P (at least MotoGP is). Downloaded Kola Cell tonight, pretty sweet @$$ level.

To a certain extent. We'll never have the same smooth playing experience as bb players will, and quite frankly I feel bad about lagging others if thats what plaing on 56k will do. I just intend on mostly using it to download new content and such and the occasional game vs friends

Is there any way to get the level without Live? I heard that they were going to put in on a disc as well?

dparker - I haven't tried/checked but I suppose one could download it on a memory card if there was one big enough (Kola Cell is 1902 blocks big - my memory card only holds like 500). I heard rumors XBox magazine is supposed to start having downloadable content on the demo cds - the past 2 issues have had nothing as of yet. I can't say for certain

And if you read any of my other posts you'd see that I took that concern in mind. Sometimes I'd like to get on just to piss you people off who think you're so much better just because you have broadband. There was a time in online gaming where 56k and bb played together without you morons thinking you're all that. In fact, it was the broadband people who seemed to enjoy it more since they had the advantage over the high pingers - it was only when the dialup users were skilled enough to own the broadband queens that they started whining about how they got lagged down and other lame excuses.

To be honest it seems a lot of you bastards have the same fvcked up reasoning that the 56k'ers will lag everyone else down. Where's your proof that it will?

Well, to get back on topic, after playing through the level, i can say that it is neat, albeit a tad bit short (if you know how to utilize all the resources given to you).

As of right now the only way to get it is via XBOX Live but Ubisoft said they would find a way to make it available for everyone.

I don't understand why only XBL-type games can be online-updated. If MS' big strategy was online-connectivity, why can't they serve a place for all game developers to provide game updates? (And if it helps sales, why not do updates?) God knows there are games out there that need to be "patched" or "updated"... even if they're not XBL-able. The damn port is on the back of the console... unused otherwise.

This gives console-haters a perfect reason to stay with PC games. :|
