So, I got a new work laptop today, finally replacing the old D630 Conroe beast they had me using for the last 3 years, It's a Dell e6410 with an i5 520m. (2.4ghz, HT, Turbo to 2.933) I'm not going to lie, it's pretty nice. (And I'm a Green Team guy) It has me wondering though, is this new laptop faster than my desktop? (Kuma 7750 @3ghz with a 240mhz clock to speed up the L3) :( I'm going to be really depressed if it is. (Unfortunately the bench doesn't have mobile processors)

If your home puter is fast enough for anything *you* yourself need it for why worry?

It should be 50% faster than your current setup, but if you are happy with your current performance, doesn't matter, it's not a whole world of difference.

Yep, a lot faster. Sorry.

I'm going to be really depressed if it is.
On the contrary, you should be happy, and I should not have had said "sorry" a while ago. This just means you can now upgrade your rig, guilt-free :)

You can compare similar processors, and do a clock for clock comparison (similarly clocked i5 and Kuma, as close as possible if not exactly clocked the same), then you can extrapolate the performance diffs. Won't be as good as an outright bench, but that will give you a ballpark figure of the difference.

Nope, I'm depressed. The most processor intensive thing I do is play SC2, and that runs just fine on the Kuma, but now I WANT to upgrade, when I have much better things to spend my money on. (Car parts, beer, etc.)

how does SC2 run fine on your machine when 2/3rds of the people on i7's @ 4ghz are whinning during a carrier raid?

Everything runs smooth as glass on my desktop, even during 8 player FFA or 4v4 matches, and that's at the stock 2.8GHz (for the moment). I'm "only" running a GTX 285 (while many of the whiners are running HD 5870s and GTX 470s / 480s) and it's just installed on a regular mechanical HDD, so I don't know where the $@&# their problem is coming from.

Perhaps they'd be better off doing a fresh reformat / reinstall...

Simple, I'm ok with 20fps, and don't need to have every single setting maxxed every single time. (plus my 4870 is the 512meg verson, so I keep textures 1 notch below max)

Plus, initial reports seem to indicate that SC2 is only dual threadded, which means that we're not looking at the difference between my Kuma being 2c/2t and an i7 being 4c/8t, we're only looking at the difference in IPC, and between 3 and 4ghz. If we just pull numbers out of thin air, if we say i7 has 50percent better IPC than me, and I'm getting 20 FPS CPU limited, they'd be CPU limited at 40FPS. If they want 60 they're SOL.

Yup :D:D:D SC2 even runs fine averaging almost 40FPS in singleplayer on my netbook. I'm using low settings, but am tempted to start cranking settings to medium, but I'd rather OC the CPU on that first. ():)

Anybody know how to OC a U230? :sneaky: I've heard rumors of the PLL being locked, but nothing concrete. SetFSB doesn't list compatibility with it unfortunately.
