New Wireless setup..wtf?

Okay, so my old wireless D-link 802.11b router broke the other day. I went to circuit city and bought a netgear 802.11g router and a netgear 802.11g USB adapter. The problem is I'm getting exteremely slow speeds (~100KB/ps down) with the new setup. My previous wireless D-Link setup would get around the same speeds if directly wired (~500KB/ps). Now I don't know alot about 802.11B and G, is there a difference? I thought G was better, is it not? The D-Link was a cheaper buy AND older technology and it was alot better. Does Netgear just suck or do I have some settings wrong?

[*]Did you adapter break too? It would work fine with the new Netgear router.
[*]Make sure you have wifi security enabled so that your neighbors aren't leeching your bandwidth.
[*]You may want to make sure the router has the latest firmware.
[*]Do you experience slow speeds even when you are right next to the router?
[*]What are the speed differences between wired and wireless?

Just replaced a Netgear 624 that was about a year old with a Zyxel x 550. It started radomly disconneting from the itnernet. Now no more problems. If it's not to late, you may want to take the Netgear back and get something else.

The router is like 10 feet away from the computer so I don't know why its so slow. The speed differences are HUGE compared to wired (but with my old D-Link wireless router it was pretty close to wired speeds, if not the same). And Yes I have wpa-psk security on.
