New Wireless N Network - Issues

I bought a new 802.11N Netgear router, Netgear Rangmax adapter for the laptop and an adapter for the desktop. All of them are the rangemax 802.11N. I have it all setup, but the disappointing part is that its no faster than the G network was. My router sits about 8 feet in front of where i am with my laptop, the desktop is one room over about 16 feet away. I've tried downloading a large file from my desktop and it peaks about 2.9 meg per second. It doesn't even upload that fast, around half that or a little slower. The router is set to 270mbps and says its connected at that. Theres nothing around to interfere with signal. Thanks for any suggestions
 
Well since its been almost 24 hours since you posted this, and no responses yet, ill take a jab at it. Im not certain but if you have any 11b or 11g devices connected to you're router, it might default to the speed of the slowest device. If all you're computers are 11n then try restricting access to just 11n devices in the routers web interface. Also try a different channel? Im really just shooting in the dark here, honestly from what you said, everything seems like it should be working fine. Probably just have to wait for Jack or spidey to chime in. Good luck.
 
Let's get your units straight.

When you say "2.8 meg" do you mean 2.8 megabits or 2.8 megabytes?

If it's 2.8 megabytes, that's about normal for a wireless connection. If it's 2.8 megabits, then you've probably got some interference. Try changing the channels on which you're connecting.
 
I am using a DLINK n 635 router... N PCI card for my desktop and N card on my GF's laptop. I did this switch since I wanted to be better able to stream videos to my PS3 connected to my TV. With my earlier router (G based) I could only see low quality or DivX/Xvid with high compression. Now I can finally send those nice MP4 files with very high bitrate. Anyhow to stay on your topic... when I upgraded to my N based network I was expecting amazing results. My max transfer rate from one computer to another is roughly 2.9 megabytes per second. In other words a 300 Meg video file takes roughly 2 minutes.

It shows my connection at 300 Mbps... however I am still confused if they mean Mbit/s or actual Megabyte per second.

I have "only N" selected in my router's settings and I have tried different channels. It seems this is the speed you get... which is still vastly superior to the 1 megabyte maximum (if I was lucky), I was getting with my G based setup before. I am sure it can burst faster too.

I have read reviews where their N based setups would be able to sustain 6 megabytes a second... would love to know their magical settings. I am also in a small condo so distance is not affected but I do have to admit that all my neighbors have a wireless setup so there might be for sure some interference present.
 
You've got interference for sure then and that is what is slowing you down. Especially if you were only getting 1 MBs with G.
