I'm currently doing my 1st dual core build using an A64 X2 4600+.
I'm at the point where I've installed the OS WinXPpro-SP2 and all the Nvidia drivers from
the MB vendors? site. I have no Yellow ? when I display the Device Manager. I've yet to pull down any updates from MSoft website.

Most forum posts I've seen mentioning MS hotfix or AMD special drivers for X2 cpu are more than a year old. Does anyone know if simply pulling down all updates from MS website will include these specialty fixes/drivers for dual core CPU. Or do I still have
to individually apply them.

If manual installation/customization is still necessary any build specific advice on how to procede would be appreciated.

Thank You Osage.
I will pull down all the current updates from MSupdate then apply all the hotfixes
discussed in the MS article you pointed to.

There are a lot of X2 downloads listed on the AMD website. Still hoping someone can tell
me which of those AMD pgms are absolutely necessary.

When I was on XP I got all Window updates and also installed these two from AMD's website, link.

AMD Dual-Core Optimizer - The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer can help improve some PC gaming video performance by compensating for those applications that bypass the Windows API for timing by directly using the RDTSC (Read Time Stamp Counter) instruction. Applications that rely on RDTSC do not benefit from the logic in the operating system to properly account for the affect of power management mechanisms on the rate at which a processor core's Time Stamp Counter (TSC) is incremented. The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer helps to correct the resulting video performance effects or other incorrect timing effects that these applications may experience on dual-core processor systems, by periodically adjusting the core time-stamp-counters, so that they are synchronized. And

AMD Athlon? 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (x86 and x64 exe) 1.3.2.16 - Allows the system to automatically adjust the CPU speed, voltage and power combination that match the instantaneous user performance need. Download this Setup Installation program (EXE) to automatically update all the files necessary for installation. This package is recommended for users whom desire a graphical user interface for installation. This .EXE driver is a user friendly localized software installation of the driver designed for end-users. This driver supports AMD Athlon? 64 X2 Dual Core processors on Windows XP SP2, Windows 2003 SP1 x84 and x64 Editions.
.

I installed the AMD driver first and rebooted, before the optimizer.,only need these two.

1) It is not necessary install the MS update that osage links to.

Without these updates, computers that are equipped with these power management-capable, mobile, dual-core processors may experience decreased performance or unexpected behavior.

2) All you need are the two AMD drivers.

** I totally skipped Mem's post which seems to mirror mine anyhow. :p
