I got a non-oem windshield replaced a little over a month ago. It rained yesterday for the first time since and I couldn't see **** with the new windshield in the rain. The water won't bead so it's just a sheet of blurry mess. I had to turn my wipers twice as fast as everyone else just to get some visibility. Clarity is crystal clear when it's dry though.

A google search shows some people getting genuine oem windshields and having the same problem. Do new windshields commonly come with no repellent coating on them?

I have never heard of a windshield coming with Rain-X pre-applied.... is that kind of like expecting a fender to have a few coats of wax on it after you get it out of the body shop?

No windshields come with repellent on it.

The windshield you probrally got has been sitting in a warehouse and its dirty. Maybe not visually but dirty enough for water to cohear to it and not bead.

Apply RainX or you can get use car Polish and work it into the glass(works in small sections) It takes some time to work it in. This will remove the layer of dirt. Make sure to wipe with Iso Alcohol 50/50 mixture with water to remove polishing oils.

You will see after you do this even with no rainX your windshield will repel water amazingly. Though apply RainX or it will eventually get dirty again.

I apply the shit out of RainX on my windshields. It helps in the ridiculous 7 inch per hour rainstorms we get in the summer. 70mph + rainx = no need for wipers in < 1 mile visibility.

This.

I prefer the regular spray-bottle with a couple rags to apply a generous amount. It really does almost entirely replace your wipers. Another nice benefit for those who get snow/ice is that it will slide right off. No chipping-off ice required. :)

Works great to keep snow/ice off your lights in the winter...

Snow? Ice? What is snow?

Ice is what I put in my drinks.

It'll just rub off eventually from friction of the wiper blades, so no windshields aren't going to come with a water repellent on them. Just clean your windshield good.

You thinking of something like this?

Permanent windshield coating is rather high end.

I think none of the manufacturers put that on. You may be able to get it applied at some dealerships, but you'd definitely have to pay extra for it (whether or not it's a hidden charge is a different discussion).

Even in Texas we need a scraper at least 2 or 3 days a year. It sucks because you have to buy a new one every year because you forget where the old one went.

i end up buying a new one every year due to the edge melting over the summer. mebbe i should keep it inside until needed, but then im sure id lose it anyway.

when i replaced my trucks windshield i had no problems with water not beading up, but my civic has a windshield from wal-mart (had no idea they even sold them, but i found a receipt in the glove box when i bought the car) and when it rains, unless i use the wipers on full until it dries, its a blurry mess. im gonna try the rainX thing to see if it changes that.

I have never heard of a windshield coming with a RAIN-X type product pre-applied.

It only lasts like a year anyway, so yeah.. just apply it yourself.

Rain-X works great. After you apply it the first time, you will be amazed to see the water bead up and just roll off. More than worth the $5 and a few minutes to apply it.

First, thank you for not simply making a glib comment; it is much appreciated. Too many forums have persons who are not even attempting to address the topic. Thank you for the tip. I have the same problem with my new, non OEM glass as the first post. I figured there was some surface finish irregularity (200 bucks vs. 900 bucks; I rolled the dice). Today was the first rainy day since glass installed and it was a blurry mess despite wiper action and washer fluid spraying heavily. I will try out your suggestions.

Whenever I wax my car, I also wax the windows with unsalted butter. Does a good job at keeping the rain off.

RainX is magical. I tend to forget it exists and every few years I remember, RainX a windshield, and am amazed again.

Agree with others, factory glass has no repellent goop added (in any case I know of). Might just be bad wiper blades?

Probably the case where the old windshield that was replaced had been washed repeatedly over the years with fluid that had repellent in it.
But the new one was clean and pristine and had not, so the difference was immediately noticeable.

And yes, there's no repellent on a new glass.

You would be surprised what mayhem ensues when applied to the traction-part of the tires of those you do not like. It actually repells movement, or any interaction with the road surface.

I learned this by accident many years ago and not by mayhem.
