My new western digital 120 gb se hard drive makes a clunk sound right before the computer shuts down. Is this normal with WD hard drives? My old IBM 60gxp only makes a soft click noise when shutting down.
My WD hard drive connected to a Promise controller makes a clunk sound both when it cycles on and off. AIDA32 reports no SMART problems, and the drive seems to work fine, so I guess it's normal.
Doesn't the "click of death" mean the hard drive is clicking and clunking during seeking and writing? Mine is quiet during seeking and writing. It only clunks when shutting down.
Some of you say it is normal. Could this noise be the hard drive parking?
The clunk during power down is the drive's heads moving intp their parked positions. This is a good thing. How loud it is depends on the drive and the setup used to snap the heads into position and hold them there.
On some drives you may hear a click when they are first powered up. This is the heads coming out of their parked positions. Once again its normal.
