There is no way to "teach" chronic tailgaiters anymore than you can teach any other selfish and stupid person. Tailgating is inherently dangerous.

I have a few strategies . . .

Never appear flustered and NEVER speed up. I usually try the speed-up/slow-down maneuver. Constantly vary speed by only a tiny bit so the person behind constantly has to hit their brakes but do not appear obvious and never brake suddenly.
Eventually they will get so irritated with your little game that they will usually give some distance or pass.

I also thought a fine spray of brake fluid onto the car's paint job behind might also give some satisfaction. :D

<< Tailgaters flashing at you thinking when you're at least going the limit on two-lane road or on right lane of a freeway? d00d flash him back! >>

when you are on a thruway and in the outside lane (fast lane) and someone flashes you that means move to the right lane and let them pass! if you want to just do the speed limit stay in the right lane.

Whenever I go through the suburbs, there is always some asshole trying to ram the back of my car because I am doing like 40 in a 30.

One time, I just stopped my car, got out, and he looked so freaked out. I walked up to his window, made the "roll down" motion, and told him to get off my fvcking ass or I would hit the brakes full stop and he would watch his insurance rates go up. He made a U-Turn shortly after :p

I always slam on my brakes and then if they start to pass me I speed up so it takes longer for them to pass.

hey, i do that too. its pretty fun especially on a two lane highway. i've been a witness to many head on collisions this way. serves'em right too, bastards!

I like to use my left foot to hold the brake pedal down just enough so that the brake lights are on constantly whether I am accelerating or braking :D

Right now, in Northern Va/D.C. metro a brake mechanic is smiling.

:D

And it is just plain stupid to slam on the brakes in front of a tailgater. It is also wise to not antagonize anyone. ;)

i don't get it. if someone's tailgating and you slam on the breaks, causing him to rearend you, doesn't that damage your car too? sure his insurance company pays for it, but your car was damaged, and you had to go through the hassle of taking the car to the garage and getting the damage fixed. besides, there is a real chance of whiplash if you get rearended. isn't it easier to just move over and let the person pass?

it's actually easier to just let the other guy pass and then launch stc (surface to car) missiles.

not if you have a crap car. plus, my bumper already has a deep gouge in it from before I got it, so if I got rear-ended that would get fixed as well. Voila, the car is better than it was before. :D

Some nutjob was tailgaiting my ambulance when I was enroute back to the trauma center with a shooting patient. He was right behind me on the freeway when I was going ~80 with my lights and sirens on, guess he thought he would let me clear the traffic for him. I talked to dispatch on the radio and got a Nevada Highway Patrol car to wait for us about a mile ahead on the freeway. He got pulled over and issued a citation for over a grand. The NHP officer met me at the trauma center and said to call them if that ever happened again.

There is a huge fine for following an emergency vehicle when it is lit up like that.

I have been in around 10 - 15 accidents, they don't bother me, plus you get a loaner if it is going to take more then a few days.

P.S. I live in an area where I can see 200 - 300 deer sometimes on an 8 mile stretch.

dood, this just happend the other day. i was on the freeway and i was driving and the ambulance was passing through. and this guy on a motorcycle was like waving everyone to pull over cuz the ambulance was coming. as soon as the ambulance passed him, he gunned it right behind the ambulance tailed the ambulance for a pretty long distance. his path was clear because everyone was still trying to get back onto the road way.

i honestly hate people who do this. they're putting their life and the persons inside the ambulance dying at risk to get into another accident.

one time i was waiting by this corner and like it was the cars turn to go, the light was green, and sure enough a ambulance came and they had to stop and bang! they car that was supposed to be going got rear ended. that kinda sucked.

<< Causing an accident for any reason is just plain stupid. Whiplash (spinal injury) is not funny. >>

Im sure its not funny. However, rolling around in a pile of money from the settlement afterwards would be quite fun. :)

tailgating is dangerous BUT:

wouldn't it just make a lot more sense to just get the F!CK out of the way?
