New W7 User Aero Lag Question...

I just installed the W7 x64 on a fresh install. With a Q9550, 8GB of ram, GT220 w/ 1GB, and a 300GB raptor.

I did not notice this on Vista x64 but with this OS I notice the GUI lagging or delayed with the Aero themes on. Once I switch to classic it is fine. Is this normal and/or is there anything I can do to fix it? I do have the latest non beta nvidia drivers installed as well(not the ones that were recalled either).

You check the Drivers in system much less powerful than yours Aero does not lag.

Yes, that's what he's saying. There's no reason why Aero should be lagging with such a setup; even a measly GeForce FX can run it without an issue.
 
What exactly should I be checking for? I do a clean install then I install the chipset then video drivers and it's there. I did format and am going to do another fresh install today is there anything I should do differently?
 
Maybe try allowing W7 to run with the Microsoft provided driver. It will more than likely install one right out of the gate for your card.
 
I did that and it was the same result. I even tried the latest beta driver from nvidia. I looked it up on Google and there seems to be quite a few people with the same issue.

Given your hardware the basic nVidia drivers should run very fast.

So, clean up (Really CleanUp) all the nVidia "Fluff", and configure the Video with the OS' drivers for your card.

Then take it from there, do not load the OS with more "Junk" until you resolve it the issue with the basic drivers.

When it works Ok try the latest WHQL drivers.

People do not realize that the releases of nVidia drivers cover huge amount of different cards and sometimes, here and there, it covers a new card.

Chances are that most releases do nothing specific with One specific card for long period of time.

The myth that every new release speeds up any nVidea card that One have is long time just a Myth.

Some times a new release might correct a bug in a card that One does Not have, and actually sc**w up the card that One does have.

Ok. Anything specific you recommend? One quick question what would have changed from vista to 7 that would make it react this way on a fresh install? I am kind of concerned on my other computers that I was going to install it on that it will do the same now.
 
3DMark is always a good baseline benchmark. The Windows Experience Index is also decent since it would be obvious if something is wrong if your score was flatlining.
 
I clean installed W7 on an ASUS notebook (T7200, 8600M GS) that ran aero smooth without any problems with only stock OS drivers installed. You should check your setup at the hardware level. Is this a new video card? Try a different one? PCI-e power plugged-in?
 
It is a newer card purchased around november last year. I have another one same model can I swap them out without uninstalling anything? There is no pci-e power it is a low profile/power card. I had vista installed a few days ago no problems what could cause such a drastic change like that if the drivers I downloaded were the same for both vista x64 and 7 x64?
 
Yes. But the GT 220 should be plenty powerful enough. Remember: even integrated GPUs are good enough to drive Aero.

And if you wanted to swap cards for another of the same model, yes, you can do that without uninstalling anything.

So it sounds like there's nothing wrong with your video card then. In that case, I'm not sure what to tell you. Are you sure the lag isn't all in your head?
 
No I'm definite that there is a gui lag compared to my vista install. With aero enabled the windows stutter when maximizing. Same thing with context menus.

This is a known problem with Windows 7 and has a huge thread going on at the official forums. (Microsoft's website windows 7 forums) One reason why some people go back to Windows Vista because the issue still has not been fixed yet. Some say it is a feature others say it is a problem. No one really knows for sure.
 
Is it going to happen on all my windows 7 computers? I have a new mac mini I was planning to install it on but now I am unsure whether I should even bother.

No, the likelyhood of it happening on all of your computers is slim, unless they are all the exact same machine. The only reason i could fathom this being such a large issue is simply newness, Win7 and Aero together is new enough it hasnt worked out all the kinks with every single chipset combo under the sun, and some people have the right combinations to drive up problems.

As it's been said before, you dont need a behemoth video card to run Aero, before I put Ubuntu 9.10 on this laptop, i had Win7 on it (RC). It ran Aero fine and its a 4 - 5 year old Latitude 9100. Thats a 64MB mobile ATI video card. Smooth as silk. The kinks will work out sooner or later.
 
So in your honest opinion is it still worth it to install windows 7 now? Also is this something that can be fixed with an update from Microsoft or will it have to be another version of windows?

This is not a problem with Windows 7. It's working just fine for all the rest of us. There's something wrong with your system. I have much weaker specs than you (video card inlcuded) and aero is fast and lag free.

Stop trying to blame this on Windows 7 because it's not a general problem with Windows 7, IT'S A PROBLEM WITH YOUR SYSTEM.
