New VW Touareg SUV article

OoOOoh... definitely nice... 😀 ...why did there have to be a Porsche Cayenne... 🙁 Porsche shouldve stuck to sportscars...

Upon starting the V10 TDI we asked, "Is this thing running or do I need to try this again?" The helpful assistant from Volkswagen assured me that the engine was indeed on and sent me on my way. There was no valve clatter, no smoke, and no vibration to be felt at all from this engine. Such refinement is amazing for a 5.0L V10 that happens to be a diesel. Pulling out into city traffic shows how apt this engine really is: starting off from the line is most impressive, dare I say sports car like. There is over 5000 lbs. of bulk to move with this package, but the horsepower and more importantly the massive 550 lb-ft. of torque available from the initial tip in of the throttle is accompanied by a firm shove back in the seat. The 28 mpg combined fuel economy that is normally reserved for cars that weigh half as much is equally impressive. Even when really using the V10 TDI in what could be called the upper rev range for a diesel, the engine still retains a good deal of refinement never fully revealing its diesel roots.

You know it's a diesel right? Are you amazed when you hear that a gasoline powered SUV gets 16mpg compared to 24mpg for a car? Diesel cars get mileage numbering in the 40s and 50s, so it's not amazing, just because diesel has a higher fuel density than gasoline.

Of course I know it's a diesel

I've been the one cranking out all the Touareg article for the past few months here in OT...

Anyway, people like to point at SUV's for their poor gas mileage...yet this Touareg with it's diesel not only has stump pulling torque, but the fuel economy to put an Accord or Altima to shame.

So what if it uses a diesel to get that mileage...it's not VW's fault they they are the only ones putting the engines in vehicles other than pickups here in the US.

This is awesome. I just wish they made it a tad bigger to directly compete with H2, Suburabn and the Expididtion. The Imports IMO are still misreading a certain segment of the market which is the large, able, SUV like the H2.

I'm just saying that 28mpg is not a big deal with diesel, any more than 2000 miles per cubic centimeter is a big deal with a cold fusion powersource 🙂.

If I were to buy an SUV and had vast amounts of money, I would buy a Touareg, and drive in 24" water.

Now you understand why i've been pimping the virtues of modern diesel engines around these parts.

Word has it that the Touareg will also be available with the VAG 5-cylinder 2.5L TDI as well, which has 170hp and ~260lb.ft. Thats good enough for me! 😀

Funny that you call them "able"... I'd be willing to bet that the Touareg is better at offroading than any American made SUV, except the real Hummer.
There's nothing 'able' about being a bloated Surburban land yacht. What is 'able' is driving in 24" of water and not getting your pantyhose wet.

Diesel is sure good for that 🙂 But cars that weigh half as much have diesel MPG in the 50's or higher, so what are they talking about? GAS engines of cars that weigh half that much might get that MPG.

Diesel cars other than VW's have no importance here in the US. That's why 😀 If it weren't for VW, the only diesels we'd be able to get would be on Ford, Chevy, and Dodge pickups.

wtf? you gotta pay money to the VW dealer to change/charge a battery? I'm pretty sure the plastic crap is gonna be a pain in the ass to take off.

The linked photo is of the base VR6 engine. CHeck the look on the V8 and V10. simply beautiful..
And actually the panels shouldn't be a pain to remove. Unlike el-cheapo Japanese vehicles, German vehicles always take care to see than even the engine bay looks nice, neat and well-tucked. Almost as a work of art. Look under the hood of almost any Japanese vehicle (Lexus probably is a slight exception, but then they always copy Mercedes), and you will see a total ungainly maze of wires and whatnot crap. No so in a German vehicle.

About removing the plastic pieces, they all have spring loaded twist screws which one can easily remove with 1/2 turn of a flat screw-driver.

And as another poster mentioned, VW T-Reg is gonna be one of the best production offroaders on this planet exluding the original Humvee. VW's target was to beat ROver (current best production lux offroaders) in off-roading and atleast equal BMW X5 (best on-roader) in on-road handling. The Diesel is gonna be stunner engine.

Currently I believe Car & Driver is doing test with all these new SUVs including the H2 and VW T-reg. Should have the results in the next 1 or 2 issues. Will be interesting to see how they pan out..

Rowr! IMO this is the most appealing SUV on the road for us mortals (the new Range Rover is my overall favorite, but I doubt I will ever be in the position to spend $80K on a truck).

If you know what all the stuff is, it's not an "ungainly maze of wires and crap" .

And honestly, what the fvck does it matter if the engine bay is covered in plastic? Does that help you justify the price? I wouldn't get a woody over it, It's just more useless crap to get in the way 😉

Hmm...I daresay the engine compartment on my Acura CL-S is just as nicely "plasticized" as my roomate's TT. 😛
And the panels are simple to remove, usually they are held on by plastic thumbscrew-like fasteners.

BTW, I would kill for a V10 Touareg. What a beautiful vehicle.

I'd rather see the engine and a bunch of ugly wires than plastic. The engine and its systems ARE the work of art.

Here is the V10. I have to wonder what the plastic sheet is for.

the only thing I see if they are bragging alot about it's off-road ability, but from the pictures the X-fer case looks to be belt driven 🙁

Uhh... i'd have to disagree. A Grand Cherokee or a Wrangler will both whoop ass off pavement

WJs have a higher departure angle(29 degrees versus 28 stock). TJs departure is over 30 degrees. At least it has a 2 speed transfer case. Although independent suspension will kill it.

As you can see in the first 2 pics, that is the same truck pre and post SFA

Why do you need 4 wheels on the ground (except with the open differential they talk about)? Besides, no one said the Touareg was for rock climbing.

Okay, I forgot about the Cherokee, but is it really that good without mods? I don't consider the Wranger an SUV.

Geez, It's about time... I have been waiting 3 years for that damn thing.

I just hope we can get it in the US with the V10 TDI. Finally a vehicle worthy to replace my 1998 Jetta TDI. I just hope they do the AAV as well. Same chassis shouldn't be too hard.
