Ive noticed there are a ton of deals new cars, but used cars (I went to a CPO toyota dealership) are still priced up there.

1) I will be driving 85 miles each way for 5 days a week for a while

2) It needs to be comfortable/have cruise control

3) It has to get 30+ highway (ive noticed even camry/accord v6's can squeak into that range)

Is my best bet getting a 1-3 year old car with moderate miles, or getting a new car with an incredible deal thanks to all of this "employee discount pricing stuff going on

Ive heard TDI's mentioned, and then also honda/toyota as the best for taking a mileage beating.

quite frankly if it were me, I'd buy a new hyndai (sp?)

Make that my "beater" with a warranty. Those miles will start to add up quick and with it comes the associated maintenance.

which means the warrenty will be gone in no time. which will make you wonder why you bought a hyundai.

do tell about this "warranty gone in no time", honda/toyota warranty are pretty dang crappy IMHO and I drive a 2004 acura. So I believe I offer an experienced position given that I drive 75 miles each way to work.

I'd go with a used car.

I might get to work from home one day a week, so 900 total is likely, but that might drop to 700'ish

100000/500 = 200 days, thats a warranty gone in under one year.

That would be 3-4k miles a month, 50k miles a year, 100k miles in 2 years... so gone in 2 years aka no time?

as compared to other 36K warranties?

do the math on repairs/scheduled maintenance.

I'm not pushing the car...just that when you are putting that many miles on a car you need to think about the total cost of ownership and not jump on a bandwagon. "but japenese cars are the best. They have maintenacne that needs to be done just like all the rest and I would rather have that maint paid for. You will run a car into the ground with that kind of mileage.

Trust me. I've already ran the numbers on keeping my 2004 acura TL. It is in my best interests to use the TL for my weekend car and purchase a hyundai for getting to work. Even though it won't be nearly as enjoyable.

for the mathmatically uninclined.

85*2 = 170 mi per trip.
assume 5 trips per week = 850 per week.

with no vacation whatsoever = 44200 per year.

I think the new Sonata is nice. Not sure if you're looking at that one, but it looks pretty darn good.

Based on the mileage, I'd definitely get a used car that is knowsn to be reliable. Simply based on the number of miles you'll be driving, you'll fly through a new car warranty which is the only thing really worth paying for.
