new vista x64 install on new HD

Hello,

so i just installed Vista x64 on a brandnew system and a brandnew HD.

I did not format the HD..i plugged it in and let Vista Install DVD rip. Vista saw the HD as "unallocated" space and installed Vista fine.

In Vista, when i go to "manage Storage" i get the partition listed as NTFS and also i dont have any problems with the new PC build at all.

But using Partitionmagic, Paragon Partition Manager or similar they all see the partition as "invalid".

Booting on bootable XP CD and looking at the HD shows it as normal NTFS partition.

My question now:

Should i have formatted the HD before installing Vista?

How can i get partition/NTFS information like sectors/block if no partition software can read this partition and is able to give me info? How can i get NTFS info for the HD??

Georg.
