I just ran Norton Antivirus on my computer (I installed it two days ago cuz I was worried about an email from netpartner- turns out they were formerly pointclick) and it found the "joke.exe" virus aka W95.hybrid.??? (i forget what the ??'s were...).

BE CAREFUL!

I hadn't even opened any emails from people I don't know and I also use Eudora which doesn't automatically open attachments or run Java or VB or whatever it is that Outlook Express does.

BE CAREFUL!

Norton couldn't get rid of the virus so it is quarantined...I planned on reformatting this weekend anyway.

Just a heads up...

wait, so the virus was in the Netpartner zip file? uh oh, think I opened that, oh well, I was going to format anyways. On a differnt note, what are we supposed to do with those Netpartner files? they look like some sorta tax forms?

I've yet to have a virus infect any system that's been mine (including the ones I've built for other people as long as I was responsible for them afterwards). I use Norton AV, but even that has yet to pick up a virus unless I was deliberately opening an infected file to test it.

I have never had an email virus. I feel left out.

What have other users experiences been with email virus frequency. Never? 10 per day?

Just for the record:

Hybrid is a harmless virus.

but:
W95.Hybris.gen

Discovered on: September 25, 2000

December 7, 2000:
Due to a recent increase in world-wide infections of this worm, SARC is increasing the
threat level of this worm to 4 and adding it to the "Top Threats" list.

W95.Hybris is a worm that spreads by email as an attachment to outgoing emails. It was
discovered in late September of 2000. Although minimum reports of infection were reported
in October 2000, the worm started to become common in early Nov 2000

The message may include the text "Snow White and the Seven dwarves" and the
attachment may have one of several different names, including, but not limited to:

anpo porn(.scr
atchim.exe
branca de neve.scr
dunga.scr
dwarf4you.exe
enano porno.exe
joke.exe
midgets.scr
sexy virgin.scr.
(from here)
If you have hybris then watch out!

Isn't there a virus that's hidden in Emmanuel.exe or something like that?

A teacher at school today mentioned that she opened that...

Yeah, the viruses have seemed to start running rampant around my computer...luckily I have Norton AntiVirus 2001 installed.

I do not think that the virus came in with the Netpartner email.

I had already heard about this virus and was quite surprised to find that it had infected my computer! :Q

This is my second virus- it really didn't do anything to my computer and I didn't notice anything odd. My first virus was far nastier and still comes back to haunt me once in awhile- the NYB Virus. See, this lil fscker likes to hide in all floppy disks that you put in the floppy drive of the infected computer and it infects the Master Boot Record.

BUMP!

I received the Net-Partner/PointClick email w/ 2 Ms Word attachments last week sometime. I had just recently done a clean install and hadn't gotten to installing Norton AntiVirus yet. I was extremely hesitant to open the attachments w/o protection but I did anyway. I haven't noticed any problems whatsoever since opening them.

Upon reading this thread I installed Norton AntiVirus 5.0 and updated it. The scan found nothing. I hope it's clean!

By the way, what were the attachments about? Why all the legalease?

I've gotten two email viruses, 1) Pretty Garden exe. 2) Some email worm virus I can't remember anymore.

I was scanning with the free tool at House Call
and NAV found W97M.Class.. however it was the only times that the virus popped up.. I am fed up with viruses... if you dialup and use 98.. make sure file and printer sharing is not bound to your Dialup adaptor for TCP/IP.. The intial virus that I got late last year.. took a while to track.. by default 98SE bound it to the dialup adaptors(and VPN too).
