I never thought I would say this, but nehalem is owning everyone in this thread.

Something that really angers me generally about politics, R or D, is when bills get passed that have no basis in an actual scientific evaluation of the facts at hand. With republicans, its rape this, rape that, and general refusal to believe facts regarding evolution, etc. With democrats, lately, its been gun control (never shown to work in the US) and now this (as shown by nehalem's stats above). Of course, I understand why people are afraid to vote against it........do you like violence against women?

edit:
A total of 215,273 homicides were studied, 77% of which involved male victims and 23% female victims. Although the overall risk of homicide for women was substantially lower than that of men (rate ratio [RR] = 0.27)
See guys, this is why you should never leave the toilet seat up!

23% is significant when less than 10% of homicides are committed by women.

Even to this day a woman who kills her partner spends many many more years in jail than a man who kills his partner.

I'd srsly like to see something supporting this.

Although the exact rates are widely disputed, especially within the United States, there is a large body of cross-cultural evidence that women are subjected to domestic violence significantly more often than men.[132][134][135][136] In addition, there is broad consensus that women are more often subjected to severe forms of abuse and are more likely to be injured by an abusive partner.[135][136][137]

The congress acted on the scientific consensus.

If the scientific consensus is that spousal abuse happens to both men and women, shouldn't the scientific result be to call the bill "violence against spouses act"?

In contrast to men, who killed nonintimate acquaintances, strangers, or victims of undetermined relationship in 80% of cases, women killed their spouse, an intimate acquaintance, or a family member in 60% of cases.

No, only that this one is so confident of his own self worth that the cornucopia entrusted to his keeping boundlessly overflows with gifts and that as a white male I had an easier time of arriving at this understanding. I was raised as a king and I believed it. What the fuck happened to you?

You aren't a king. If you were a king, you could slap women around and get away with it. Or leave them in your car to drown in a river. Sorry Moonfreak, you're a peasant. Stopping violence against women applies to you and the other peasants, not kings.

no statistics but i wouldn't be shocked if that were true for spousal cases. men who kill their spouse typically do so "in the heat of the moment" which is traditionally a manslaughter charge. women who kill their spouse typically do it more coolly and thought out (while spouse is sleeping, for example), because they can't just rage and beat their spouse to death. coolly and thought out is traditionally a murder charge ("with malice aforethought") further, the method used, say, poisoning, might make it a murder 1 rather than murder 2 charge.

so with men the typical rage and beat your wife to death is manslaughter, while women are more likely to draw a murder charge of one type or another. jail time increases the further up the homicide chart you go.

Clearly you have no idea what it is to be a king.
