New Video Editing Rig ...

Still a couple of months away on this new build but wanted your expertise and comments on the components I've chosen. Nothing is set in stone so I'm open to suggestions.

This rig will be for normal day to day Internet and Office applications as well as Photoshop, After Effects, and Premier Pro. No gaming.

What happens if I decide to upgrade to Vista ? Is this good enough to run Vista?
 
I wouldn't go with the 7700. I'd go with a Thermalright U-120 and a Yale Loon @ either 12 or 7v.
Yes, it will be more than enough if you go to Vista.
 
If you are going to be video editing I assume you'll be using firewire quite often.

The P5B-E built in firewire uses the VIA chipset.

The P5B-Deluxe uses the TI firewire chipset which most editors seem to strongly prefer.

Ask around in some video editing forums.

Does anyone know if there are any P965 boards with 2 IDE channels?
 
There are not to my knowledge.

P965 doesn't even natively include IDE.

It's added via third party controllers such as VIA, JMicron, etc.
 
dont get the 7700 cooler, i am using it on a d820 and it isn't much better than stock, get a arctic cooling freezer 7

I'm now thinking of going P5W DH for dual IDE. I'm thinking I can use an older IDE HDD as a scratch drive. Do you think that's a good idea?
 
i would wait and see what the quad core intels are doing price wise in a couple of months. no reason to go dual core when you can go quad core as the encoding is nearly strictly cpu and hdd limited.

as far as using a pata hdd for scratch, no issues, but i am assuming it is an older left over unit? just make sure it is not more than ~1-1.5yrs old - in that time hdds besides the 7200.10 are pretty equal to todays sata/pata in terms of str with the exception of the raptor series.

i would save the $$$ on the aftermarket hsf and just use the stock unit

I am planning to build in January so that might be an option then for me.
