New Video Cards...

When do you think they will actually come out with a single gpu card that can hold 1gb of vram? Instead of this gx2 stuff wouldnt the speed be much better if they can get it onto one card?

Already have 1Gb cards out, many different versions, however the extra memory is only useful for high bandwidth tectures etc, high AA and filtering for big resolutions.

The ATi Radeon HD4870 might have a crack against a GX2 (key word: might) and will pack 1GB of GDDR5 memory. Should be available in about a month or so. After that, NVIDIA's GT200 based chip should at least equal the GX2 and it will have 1GB of RAM. Should be out sometime late-ish summer.

Earliest: Near end of this month (4800 Series)
Likely: June/July (4800 Series and GT200)
Latest: August (GT200)

Look at the older Radeon 2900XT 1GB edition for all the proof you need. It ran about equal to the G80 8800GTS 640MB card but was priced like an 8800GTX (which it could not compete with in performance).

Now, I just have to ask one question: why should I spend $400 or so on a 4870/GT200 when a PS3 complete system with built-in BluRay player costs the same? Maybe I'm just getting old but those consoles are starting to look more and more appealing.

but with a console you dont get the fun of messing around with the hardware (unless you really really know what you re doing) and plus the system is already built (i like building my own stuff; it feels better to me that i did it and not someone else). but they do have some pretty good console exclusive games though.
