Im looking at replacing my GeForce 4 TI 4200...im looking at either a 6600GT or a 9800Pro or XT, but I dont know what one would be better.

right now my budget is about $250-300.

system specs:
Motherboard: Asus P4P800 Deluxe
CPU: P4C 3Ghz OC 3.2
RAM: GIEL Ultra 400, PC3200
Video: Asus Geforce 4 TI 4200
HDD: 400GB in two diffrent RAID 0 set ups, getting 600GB come x-mas. (not getting rid of drives, need the space)
Sound: Audgy 2

Go for the 6600 GT. If it has to be AGP then you might want to consider a vanilla 6800. Since the price of the AGP 6600 GT is around 250 and the vanilla 6800 is ~300

If your budget is up to $300, get a 6800 vanilla. They can be found cheap enough at the moment to make a 6600 GT silly at often a mere $20-30 cheaper. I think maybe Outpost had one for $250 online.

It'd definitely be better. If you can get one for $250 definitely go for it. The extra bandwidth on the 6800 compensates for the 6600 GTs faster speeds, I believe. It's clearly better. If you can unlock the pipes (about a 50% chance, maybe less, it seems), it'll run circles around the 6600GT. Well maybe not run circles... but it'll be significant.

I mean, why would you pay so much money for a 9800 Pro which is really at the end of it's life as a peformance card?

Just look in the FS/FT forums and see how many people are trying to unload theirs.

Don't get me wrong the 9800 Pro still performs very well in todays game, but today is almost over.

ok if I decided to get the 6800 instead of the 6600GT how much better would it preform?

They perform the same in most cases without AA/AF, but with AA/AF the 6800 pulls ahead considerably. If you softmod the 6800 successfully, it will be a good 10-20% faster.

Unless I missed Tweeve I don't see what games you are targeting for best performance???

Well I have a 9800Pro currently in a machine I built this summer and my vote is for the 6600GT or 6800Gt.

Well the games im playing right now is HL2. The 4200 i have now plays fine, but is really starting to show its age, Im also building to future proof as much as possible. So I just might just spend the extra money for the 6800 if it does preform that much better. it would be a better card in the long run.
