That's great. :D I'm glad we could all help. As ikickpigeons said, we were all newbies once. :beer:

Marsumane has the right idea, too. Saving up $150 after this will get you the new MB/CPU/HF&S and you'll be flying.

I just found out that in order to go with an ATX motherboard I would need to get a new case, but all the better (in due time).

cases arent really that expensive unless u want to really overclock to high speeds then u would have to get quite a few fans. u can get a sweet looking case of newegg.com for like 55 bucks with LEDS and 3 fans. very decent case.

You may be better off upgrading the motherboard/CPU along with everything else. Doesn't sound like the El Paso 2 will play nice with a new case. Tell me if I'm breaking the bank with some of my suggestions:

I'd probably go with this case. It already comes with a great PSU, so it's like getting the case for $20.

Here's the best budget board out there, the Shuttle AN35N-Ultra

It's an AMD board, so you'll want to get a Athlon XP 2500+ or one the overclocking monster mobiles. around 80 bucks there.

A new heatsink will depend on if you want to overclock, or want the best cooling for your CPU.

it may seem expensive, but keep in mind once you get these, you can sell your Gateway to pay for this stuff.

I have one more question. I was looking on NewEgg at the DVD burner that Sonic587 suggested and it said no software included, does this mean drivers or do the drivers still come with it?

No drivers will come with it. However, you do not need any. Your system should be able to auto-detect the drive and install it for you. If you do have problems, you can just download the drivers off NEC's website.

Actually the 400 that I was spending is over my budget, but if I can sell my Gateway I may be able to swing it. But I really doubt that my fiance` would by this. So I guess I will have to get everything a little at a time.

In that case, I'd drop the radeon 9800 pro. What card do you currently have? You should be able use that in your new system.

I'd go with:

The Antec case/350 watt PSU
Shuttle AN35N-Ultra
512MB Mushkin PC3200
NEC Dual Layer burner
Current videocard until you got the cash to upgrade.
Current CD-ROM/ Hard drive
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ retail if you don't want to overclock.

That'll put you around 380$ shipped. It'll be a solid upgrade compared to what you have now. It will be magicial once you get the 9800 pro in there.

this is very good advice and i REALLY good system. you wont be disapointed.

and once you do this and get it built piece out your gateway and you should be able to get a couple hundred from that to get you a 9800 or at least a used 9700 is cash is tight

I should have come to this site a lot sooner, now I have to wait for the money to be put back on my credit card in able to get this system. I hate waiting.

Is there anything I should know to buy along with all this stuff that I may need to set it up or will it all come with what I am purchasing.

from what u have and what your buying i odnt think you will need anything else as long as its all retail not OEMs.

Hey guys, looks like his pc has onboard graphics Link to Specs. He's gonna need some sort of vid card.

If you can't swing a 9800 pro now, maybe pick up a G4 Ti 4200, maybe even a used one for about $50 till you can get the 9800 pro

Good advice everyone. You can get some serious stuff for not that much at all. The recommendations people have made so far are good. In fact, you might even go the used route on some things. (Just make sure that the seller is reputable. I've had great luck selling/buying from anan's forums.) Remember refurbs from Newegg are a mixed bag, it depends if your lucky or not. I might have a 9800Pro up for sale if HL2 ever comes out.

I was fairly certain (so I checked anyway), and my system has a video card (NVIDA GeForce 2MX 100/200) in the first PCI slot. Will this hold me over until I can get the 9800 pro?

Am I assuming correctly that (Onboard LAN: Realtek 8201BL 10/100M) is an onboard NIC for this MotherBoard

This connector is for a RJ-45 (Cat 5) not a phone jack, Right?
