ok i want to spend around 420 shipped for a new video card.....
i was looking in to evga 6800gt
im going from R9700 pro
some ppl told me that 399 its to much to pay for a video card i should just wait ......
some told me that my r9700 pro should be good for another 3-4 months

i dont know what to do.. i really want to buy that video card but i dont know what to do ....
any ideas ??/

i get 4600 on 3dmark03 and 40800 on aquamark...... a little shit.. i know

What games do you play? What resolution do you usually play at? Do you have to have all settings maxed out or can you live with less?

Depending on your answers to these questions, you may find that the 9700 Pro will still be fine for you. I upgraded from a 9700 Pro to a 6800GT this past summer, and while it was definitely a hell of a lot faster, it wasn't like the 9700 Pro was really all that slow in anything....except if I went overboard and tried to turn 4xAA on in FarCry or something. (Although I've almost come to take AA for granted now...)

There are some deals to be had too; if you can get in on that $320 6800GT deal I've been hearing about, then I'd probably advise that you jump on that.

I'd say a 6800GT, but either do it now or wait until the next big hitters come. But other than that, theres nothing wrong with your 9700Pro if i'ts playing all your games smoothly at the moment. I guess it's a simple question of whether or not your happy with it.

I would forget about that 6800GT and go for the $400.00 DEAL on the Visiontek Xtasy X800 XT at Micro Center. I posted about this deal last week when my brother bought one. The regular price is $499.99 but @0% off gets you an effective price of $400.00 (before any applicable tax).

Micro Center had eight at the store in California where my brother bought his. Micro Center took the Xtasy X800 XT off the web site BEFORE they even posted the 20% Off Sale (including ALL Visiontek cards) but at least some of the stores had them on the shelf.

I repeat - the Xtasy X800 XT IS NOT LISTED ON MICRO CENTER'S WEB SITE.. But there may be some IN STORE, so if you live near one of their 20 stores you may be able to get one there. Maybe you can even order online if you can get Micro Center's SKU number. That said, here is a link to Micro Center's web site:

HINT: In the upper left-hand corner of your screen (right under the "Micro Center online" logo) you will see "Fast Finds:". Click on "Store Locations" to find the store nearest you. Good luck - the X800 XT is a great card. My brother is running an Athlon64 3500+ at 2.2GHz (200 FSB x 11 Multiplier) with his Xtasy X800 XT at 500MHz core and 500MHz/1GHz) memory speed and he is getting 78 FPS at 1,280x1,024 with everything turned on "High" in Halo.

NOTE: It seems that the Xtasy X800 XT cards' are slightly over-clocked. The default settings for my brother's card are 520MHz core and 520MHz memory. ATI-branded (made by ATI) cards official settings are 500MHz core and 500MHz memory. My brother actually clocked his core and memory down to 520MHz core and memory for stability, as the 520MHz core/memory settings proved unstable in his system after an hour of running non-GPU intensive apps.

BTW, going from a 9700 Pro should be like night and day. I tried my HIS Excalibur X800 IceQ II XT PE in my "old" P4 3.4C system with a P4C800-E Deluxe and 1GB of PC3500 Level II Mushkin to compare it to the ATI 9800 Pro 256MB that normally resides in that system. I noticed a big difference. You have a P4 3.0C instead of a 3.4C, but since the 9800 Pro 256MB is faster than your 9700 Pro you should see a big performance jump using an X800 XT.

Those people are probably the same people who will NEVER spend $399.00 on a videocard. Don't get me wrong - thats a lot of money. But things ALWAYS get less expensive as time goes by. Thats technology moving along.

As far as your 9700 Pro being good for another 3-4 months it depends on what games you are playing. I'm not trying to be elitist or sound superior, BUT if you used and played on a really fast system I don't think that you would think that 9700 Pro will be good for 3-4 months.

Of course, maybe you will be upgrading your CPU and mobo in the not-to-distant future? If thats the case and you want to game the Socket 939 Athlon64 is the way to go. By then you may even be able to get an ATI X800 XT PCI Express "reasonably cheap" and mate it to a PCI Express board from Asus, MSI, or...?

heh i just got the new mobo and cpu ........ i went from 1.8 to 3.0 and asus mobo .. I just want new video card... is my cpu that bad???? you think i need to upgrade it??

No. Your CPU and mobo are not "that bad". But from personal experience and what various hardware sites stated when the X800 XT, X800 XT PE, 6800GT, and 6800 Ultra debuted a 3GHz Pentium (or "equivalent" AMD CPU) was the minimum CPU to be able to take advantage of the power of those videocards.

This was (and still is) because even though todays FPS' (First-Person Shooter)s' are GPU intensive you still have to have reasonably fast CPU and memory subsystems to process 3D calculations and feed the info to the videocard to make the most of it's capabilities.

The most important question - how long will it take for AGP version to come around. If you are gonna wait until the summer 6800GT and X800XT will drop significantly with the arrival of a new generation. Also you'd be able to pick up the next replacement for X800Pro/6800GT for $399 with the new generation. However, if you game a lot, I wouldnt recommend waiting since you can keep waiting forever. And don't worry so much about keeping up with everyone or scores.

Does your 9700 feel choppy and slow for games at the settings you play at, or prefer to play at? If the answer is yes, then you need to buy a new card. If the answer is no, it's not time yet.
 
On aquamark for cpu i got 8500 and my friend with this great pc got 8700 i think he had amd 3500+ his pc is great for games .. im very happy if my p3.0 can get almost same score as his amd 🙂 if i get the 6800gt probly i will beat his score 🙂

all together he had 52k and i got 40k 🙂

Iv spend a lot to get the 6800gt.Do i regret it? Just a little.I went from a 9800 pro to this 6800gt.I regret it because it didnt worth the over $400 investment i put .I nearly gave away my 9800 pro to get a quick cash and bought this 6800gt.

Yes in future games, i will enjoy more my experience.I really enjoy playing doom 3 in high resolution too.

But dude.You have a 9700 pro.Unless u wanna play HL2,Doom3 and Far Cry at high lvl of detail , this card is just enough for now.

the new generation, x800 and 6800, are about twice as fast as the 9800's. there is a big difference. 6600GT is more comparable to the 9800, its a bit better though. SM3 support also.
 
There isn't really a blanket answer to this question. However, there are things that you should consider.

-How big is your monitor? What is the resoltion?
-Do you have or are you planning on getting an LCD? LCD's look the best at their native resolution, so you really can't just scale down when the card starts to get slow.
-What games do you play?
-Finally, the most important... Do you want to buy a new card? If the answer is yes and you have the cash, do it - the X800 XT/6800GT are enough of an improvement over the 9700Pro to be justified. If you are really on the fence, wait it out a bit - the 9700Pro isn't exactly obsolete yet either.

If you decide you want to get a new card see if that Micro Center X800 XT deal can work for you, if not, the 6800GT rocks and would be a wonderful addiiton to your rig.

i dont like LCDs
i play HL2 Ut 04 and ofp .. and i will play bf2 🙂
and how much is the x800xt in Micro center i cant find that deal
