ok so my 9800NP flashed to a pro started having problems. It wouldn't post and when it did post it would reboot once i got into windows. It wasn't overclocked and had been running stable in my system for over 3 years. Anyways, I sent it back in to ATI to see they can do anything about it, but since the waranty is up, they probably won't. So I'm in the market for a new video card. I'm a gamer on a budget. I still have a 2500+ Barton with 2X512 PC3200 twinmos rams. Board is obviously still agp. I was considering an X800GTO from sapphire. and came accross this and this
anyone tell me the diffence beside vpu fan and the ram sinks not being there? Oh and I have less then $200 to spend for a new card, If you have other suggestions feel free to contribute. Thanks

Here's what you pretty much have to choose from on Newegg.com :

X800GTO $155.00

X1600 Pro $114.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814131427

6800XT $146.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150157

X1300 Pro $165.00

X700 Pro $161.99

I'd go with the X800GTO or the 6800XT. If you're ok with overclocking go with the Sapphire X800GTO for $159.99, add an aftermarket cooler and unlock the extra pipes.

The Sapphire X800GTO is almost a sure lock for unlocking the last 4 pipes, and can be easily overclocked a little bit as well. I'd recommend that one.

Spending $200 for an AGP card is pointless.

Spend $150 AR for a pci-e 7600gt and $50 for a pcie mb. Finally sell your Barton + m/b as a downpayment for a new cpu.

yes man, within a budget of 200-250$ go pci e, sell your old stuff and that will bring in some moolah as well.

I really don't have the money to move to a PCIX motherboard and a new chip as I'm currently unemployed :frown:. I think I've decided to go with this since it came down in price to a more reasonable $129.99 after $30 MIR. Now I guess my next question is which VPU hsf? I've only heard about ppl using the Zalman VF700-CU is that good?

The gto is a good choice for $129 AMR. It may or may not unlock, but most gto's use either the r480 or r420 cores, and those usually OC to 500mhz or higher. I had an unlocked x800gto OC'd to 580mhz and a zalman vf700 kept the load temps ~60C, so it's a good cooler for that card. With some OC'ing the gto could easily double your performance over a 9800p.

The VF700-Cu is supposed to be an awesome GPU cooler. It's what I'm getting ready to purchase to put on my 7600GT. You need to make sure you have pretty decent airflow in your case for it to do its job well though.

dont get aftermarket cooling, spend the extra money towards a better gpu instead. stick with stock cooling as there is no problem with it and you can always upgrade that later for cheap. i'd second getting the x850xt (pe)

then go for a X850XT or X850Pro at newegg.com

if you sell your old cpu+mb+ram+card and add another 200-250$ or so, then you will get a new amd 64bit cpu+cheap pci e motherboard+ram+new card

or if you have ok ram then don't sell it
