Hey guys,

My X1950pro is going crazy could just be heatsink, but could be the memory - I don't feel like trying a new heatsink and all that jazz. I'm looking for a new video card that's faster than the x1950. I think my max is about $150 or so. What do you suggest?

bake it first. you might end up getting enough life out of it to get decent performance at $150. right now a $150 card (5770) has nearly the same performance that it had 18 mos ago; once nvidia gets their act together we should see prices across the board drop.

if you must buy something now, get the cheapest used card you can live with to tide you over until later this year.

I would see if you can find a cheap 4850 on ebay or craigslist. Just dont pay more than $80 or $90 for it. That should last the rest of the year, and compared to your X1950, it will be a major improvement.

Sometime this summer, or perhaps toward the fall, you should see prices on ATI's products come down either as a result of Fermi, or as a result of ATI's own product updates in the fall of 2010.

You can get a nVidia GTX 260 896mb 216 core for 150 to 200 bones depending on rebate etc..

Or you can slap on a 88xx or 98xx GT for around 90 bucks. It will be more then twice as fast as your 1950 , like 4x faster ,,,

You get the GTX 260 its 6 x faster,,,,,, just guessing .. gl

GTX260's are pretty hard to find these days, and certainly not in his price range if you do find one. Prices of the GTX2xx cards have jumped up due to being in pretty short supply.

A Radeon 5770 gives him ~GTX260 performance, DX11 support, great power use characteristics, and is easy to find while being well within his budget. Another vote for the 5770.

What are the rest of your system specs? If you have a single core processor, for light gaming even 4670 will suffice for $65. Next step up would be 9800GT/4850 for $80-90.

In the $150 range, assuming you have a decent enough cpu, 5770 is a good card. Get the 1GB version, not the 512mb version you linked.

That's a good question, I had to look it up since it's so long since I put this thing together.

Intel e6420 (obviously dual core)

He wants to know what resolution you game at? 1024x768,1280x1024, 1650x1050,1900x1080. Or just tell us what size your monitor is.

I saw that card too.. just bought it :)

Nice Card. At 1680x1050, it is plenty!

I had GA-965P-DS3 (rev 1.0) and my E6400 hit 3.4ghz on Big Typhoon easily at 1.312V:

I also had GA-P35-DS3L (rev 1.0) and my Q6600 G0 hit 3.4ghz on Tuniq Tower 120 at 1.300V:

So I would suggest you get a cheap aftermarket cooler like Cooler Master 212:

and crank that CPU to 3.4ghz. Get some more Ram too.

A 4890 is a good option, I see a link to one for $132 in this very forum.

Yep. 6-9 mos. Ago 4890s could be found well sub-$180 fairly often, 1GB 4850s for $100, GTX260s and 4870s dropping below $150, etc...

Gone now! (At least a lot harder to find)
