New Video Card and Still LOW FPS, WTF!

my specs are:

CPU: intel C2D 2,93 GHZ (E7500)
RAM: 3 GB 1066 corsair DDR2
Corsair F60 SSD + 1 TB Samsung HDD
PSU: 800W bronz plus
Benq 17": 1280X1024 default res, Secondary: samsung Lcd tv@1080p res.
GPU: HD 4850(old one) upgraded to HD 6870

ps: i know my cpu is old, im going to upgrade it within 3 months, im waiting for price cut in my country.

now im feeling a little regret about buying hd 6870 cos my new games now working as i want.

Test Drive Unlimited 2: drops below 30 fps especially in cities changing res, setting to low doesnt help. i cant play it on medium settings, its annoying

bulletstorm: its nice generally but i fed up with glitches: when it load new mission tasks; FPS drops makes me crazy.

crysis 2: i can play in gamer settings but i was hoping to play high settings.

nfs shift: i cant play in it high settings it was a terrible game also.

nfs shift 2: graphics awesome but i cant play it in high settings again... i want to play it on my LCD tv @1080p with high settings

2 worlds 2: exellent graphics when set to max settings, it was smooth never drop 30 FPS

as you see im not happy with my card, i cant upgrade CPU now but i can sell my 6870 quickly, what can you suggest me for GPU?

1-wait for price drop on 6990
2-buy instant 6950 and unlock to 6970?
3-buy instant NVIDIA card? (which???)

im waiting for your suggestions

Did you reinstall the drivers when you switched cards?

Also the latest drivers and patches could fix performance and stability.

Some of the games may not be well optimized, either. Like Test Drive seems to not be very optimized. Shift 2 seems to utilize more than two cores, so you're probably CPU-limited there.

so are you at 1280 or 1920? if you are at 1280 then of course not much changed because your cpu was already limiting the 4850 in many games. even at 1920x1080, your E7500 is not going to fully push a 6870 in most cases so no need for an even faster gpu until you upgrade that cpu.

@cusideabelincoln yeah new install with win 7 64 bit and cat 11.3. but what about nvidia titled games runs better at nvidia cards? is it solved switch to nvidia card or just CPU?

@toyota generally 1280, intel makes me crazy about its price strategy. So waiting for price cut to buy a new i7...

thx for reply: did u try TDU 2 or bulletstorm?

at 1280, I have a hard time believing you have trouble playing games even with the 4850.

and what crazy i7 prices are you talking about? they offer the fastest cpu you can buy for gaming for just 325 bucks. plus you could just go with the $225 i5 2500k and get the same playable experience as with the i7 2600k.

US prices for non-US forum member? Silly to argue about something being crazy or not when you're using different data points.

i know its absurd but i got 25 fps in cities on TDU2 and its making me mad @1280 res. (with 6870)
also shift 2 is not playable at high settings @1280 res

here in Turkei prices are crazy check this out
Intel Core i7 2600 3.4Ghz 352,99 USD+%18 tax

Intel Core i7 970 3,20 Ghz 12Mb Cache Lga1366 671,99 USD+%18 tax

Intel Core i5 2500K 3.3Ghz 6Mb Cache 259,49 USD+%18 tax

so god bless users that have Lga1366 motherboard from intel

as u know its not just cpu, i have to buy cpu ram and motherboard...

and if you dont believe check this online store :

im searching for mobo ram and cpu now...
i5 2500k seems nice but i need mobo and ram models that price / performance winners

^ Yeah, I think you are reaching the right conclusion: you should be working on a budget to allow you to upgrade to i5-2500k (plus P67 mobo, plus DDR3 RAM). The 6870 isn't the main issue here, & it should shine when pushed by a SandyBridge at 4GHz 🙂

today i googled a lot and some of my problems solved,

crysis 2 updated to lastest patch and install radeon pro, now i get 40 fps when maxed out settings in 1280*1024, now my eyes see some good graphics...

im going to uninstall TDU2 cos other ati owners complaining too...

i dunno what can i do about shift 2.

i want to share a 3dmark 2011 score but their servers down someting related to amazon services...

@all
im going to buy 2500k for CPU and a motherboard supports overclocking.

but 1 thing is not clear for me:
ddr rams mhz varies 2000, 1800, 1600, so on and my motherboard support that mhz when oc, but what about price and performance.

buy 1333 mhz mobo and ddr 3 1333 (lets say stock)

OR

2000 mhz ddr 3 and 2000 mhz supported mobo,

i mean does it deserve put money on mobo and rams?

@1920x1080 res what would be performance difference in fps of games??

Putting money into RAM speed is about the least performance you'll gain. Not such a great value, unless you are specifically limited by bandwidth.

A good set of DDR3-1333 or 1600 should be all you need, and these are the most affordable. Since DDR3 is backwards and forwards compatible, you could even get a 2000 motherboard with 1333 RAM.

what do u think about gskill rams? they are dirt cheap i dunno why:
2GB RIPJAWS DDR3 1333MHZ CL9 1.5V 9-9-9-24 x2 =60 $

for mobo ASUS P8H67-V INTEL H67(B3) SOCKET 1155 = 150 $ but maybe more oc capable mobo will be good?

cheaper ram makes more sense, you only get a couple % performance increase going from 1333 to 2000.

edit: yes, you need at least 4gb total.

If you are planning to overclock,

Get a P67 motherboard, I believe the H67 will not allow overclocking. I may be wrong here, but believe that is correct

Good luck in your upgrade!!!!

I think you are really CPU limited. I was able to test a 6950 2GB with a e5200 overclocked to 3.7ghz and it was still limiting many, many games at 1080p. When checking Afterburner GPU usage was 70% tops at most. The only game I was able to get 90%+ gpu usage was Crysis 1 and Warhead.

Once you get that 2500K your system will really shine.

True, he will need a P67 motherboard, or wait until May 11th to grab a Z68 chipset.

G.skill makes some of the best ram around nowdays. So it's a solid choice.

Ya. save up your money to get a Z68 board, 2500k and 2x2GB RAM. I have heard the Z68 based will be priced similar to the current P67 based boards.

If I were you I'd sell the 6870 and buy a quad core for your games.
That would be a bad idea. Here's something interesting I found: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i3-2120-2100_5.html#sect0

In five out of six tested games the budget dual-core i3 2120 is either faster or close to the i5 750. There’s only one game where the 750 soundly beats the 2120 and that’s in Far Cry 2 where both processors already score over 100 FPS. So much for the “buy quad-core to future proof yourself in games” argument.

The point is he shouldn't be chucking away his graphics card because the 4850 is quite slow. Even a decent dual-core will push his 6870 nicely.

of course he should not sell his 6870 just to get a quad but a 2120 is hardly a regular dual core core cpu. its Sandy Bridge, clocked much faster than the i5 750 and has HT so its comparable to any decent quad. basically he is doing the right thing and keeping the 6870 AND getting a Sandy Bridge quad.
