nice price, a solid answer from ATI towards NV's 7900GS, but why lower the core clock(575->512) and raise the memory speeds? also wassup with the odd clocks 512/1314mhz?

ATI was not able to produce enough chips able to deliver the higher 575 Mhz core clock. A matter of production yield. Raising the memory clock is easier but uses some of the memory headroom previously available, and doesn't make up entirely for the loss of core speed.

been seeing alot of nice coolers on newer cards lately

maybe companies are listening to consumers saying they want cool/quiet products? (i'm assuming this cooler is cool and quiet)

The cooler looks like the child of the old g4 5900 and a x1900gt 🙂

My guess is they're trying to get rid of the semi-defective r580 cores, and lowering the clockspeed would let them use more of the available cores. Lowering the price is also a good idea, so although the new gt is slower than the old gt, it now only has to compete with the 7900gs instead of the 7900gt. The latter will go up against the x1950pro.
