New version of swype is pretty bad

Anyone else update to the latest version of swype? They keep adding features that dont add anything to swype. Text prediction? gtfo with that, i can swype way faster than any predicted text that im going to have to check anyway. Personally i LOVED how it used to work, let me swype everything, and if i have to make a few fixes thats fine, i can fix it super fast.

the swyping has just gotten awful, took me like 10 tries to swype the word tossing...

deleting used to be hold button and it would delete the whole word, now it just deletes letters VERY fast.

ICS integration sucks. Sometimes the ics spellchecker will take over and try to fix a word that would have been easier to fix in swype.

Overall it just feels like shit. Hard to list all of my newly found annoyances, but i can say its much different than it used to be, and doesnt seem like something i can adapt to. Swype was one of my biggest reasons for sticking with android over ios, but with this last update, that might not be a reason anymore.
 
perhaps its wise to still stick with tapping keyboards 😀

the text prediction Swype adds is useful when you use it for tapping, but I don't see how it invokes while swyping...

swype was so great though. Before using swype, i was a blackberry user. (8310, then 9700). Tried the iphone, but hated tapping. Got the captivate despite it not having a physical keyboard and ended up loving it.

I could never use one of those shitty slide out android keyboard anyway, the BB keyboard was the only on i liked.

Cant even go back to an older version now because the beta expires and you have to update. Thanks a alot swype!
 
disappointed to hear this, love swype on my 2.3 phone, interested in the upcoming google tablet but id hate to have to use it with a shitty version of swype
 
i just installed it but my problem is i can't add words to my dictionary and so either have to type words manually or call my friends count and tucker! ffs
 
I don't know what you're complaining about, the new beta installs ALONGSIDE any previous versions, it doesn't replace them.

I can easily switch between the two using the ICS keyboard switcher. The only reason your older version would be gone is if YOU uninstalled it. On my phone, it came pre-installed so I can't remove it, and I have no license worries anyway. But my tablet is still running both brains with no license problems, and I don't foresee any.

Besides, you can easily find the appropriate apk for your phone if you look. I have several different versions if the need should arise.

If you manually type a word that isn't in the dictionary, and then choose it from the list above the keyboard, it gets added to the dictionary, whereas previous versions would ask for confirmation. Also, you can add words to the dictionary through settings if you wish.

In addition, you switch off auto correction of typed words of you prefer it that way (I do).
 
Agreed; Swype really went backwards with this update. Adding words to the dictionary is much harder than before and it's easy for it to accidentally add junk words like captchas because there's no way to positively tell it when to add a word. In previous betas, when you tapped on an orange highlighted word in the bar above the keyboard, it would prompt you to add it to the dictionary. In the last beta before this new one, not only could you do that, but you could even go into the dictionary view and manually add any words you wanted. Now they've regressed to automatically adding words.

The delete key behavior is stupid. Now if you swipe out a word and it comes out wrong, a single tap of the delete key will delete the whole word. If you want to delete the last couple letters you have to tap a space, then tap delete the appropriate number of times. And holding down delete no longer deletes one word at a time.

Users of foreign languages are unhappy too because apparently they've added a whole bunch of completely unnecessary special characters. Like in Spanish, they added an "ñ" key, even though swiping out "Espana" will automatically enter the word as "España" (because, you know, Swype has a dictionary). In German they've added a bunch of vowels with umlauts even though the umlauts are automatically added when necessary in the old layout, and in Hebrew they've apparently decided to add a bunch of ancient Hebrew letters that aren't used anymore except by bible historians!

I'm not sure this is quite as bad as the "jumpy cursor" update, which was actually completely unusable with certain browsers AND replaced the previous version, making it impossible to stick with the older version. But it's close. I'm going back to the last version for as long as it works. Maybe eventually they'll re-add all the features they removed.
 
I haven't had any real problems thus far, though I wasn't initially a fan of Swype in general until recently.

It is hard to adjust to the backspace deleting the entire word, and it seems slower for tapping out letters than other keyboards.

Um not if you just flashed a new rom that doesnt come with swype installed (AOKP). I actually tried to just restore my swype install with TB, but ive never had any luck as there is always some issue. So I didnt uninstall anything, just installed swype on my phone like i always do...

And as for the apk, id imagine i would have the same problems as before - either wont restore, or it will expire like it has in the past. And that apk will only for for so long, some update will break compatibility and then ill be forced to use the newest version anyway.

Either way, the point is they screwed it up to the point where it just sucks. If your going to make changes like that, at least have the option to revert back.

I really hope they fix this because i dont want to go back to tapping.

weird, tried it again and it works now. previously i was typing duck/tucker and count over and over again into google. strange
 
also forgot to point this out, which might be the worst of all.

Swyping from punctuation to space bar is a complete fucking joke. I cant tell you how many people who were supposed to get a question mark, instead got:

Those are the only two i get now, but i get those much more than i get a question mark. Previous swype versions would give me other BS like MN. and other crap, but not as often as this one.

Wow. I personally think the last 4 or 5 releases were TERRIBLE and this one is the best Ive used. Fixes all the annoyances I had in previous versions specifically the keyboard jumping around...

I haven't had any problems with the punctuation to space bar. So far anyway.

Um, you realise you're in an extremely small minority of people that does things like flash 3rd party roms. What phone and what screen resolution do you have? I mainly keep tablet apk's for Swype (mainly because my gs2 came preinstalled with it), but I do have some for phones. Otherwise the internet is swarming with them.

Don't get me wrong, there are quite a few things that irritate me about the newest version, but when it deliberately keeps the old one installed alongside because it's a beta (even more beta than the old beta), there isn't much reason to complain. You lost your old Swype because YOU got rid of it, not because they made you.

still not sure why i cant complain about the newest version of swype and the direction they are headed.... Yes i deleted my entire ROM along with swype, but even if i still had it, i would still be complaining. Swype is something i love, and i personally dont want to see it ruined. If your going to run an older version, besides the problems that brings up in the first place - eventually your going to have to use the newer version. Either way, in no way am i out of line for complaining...

and yes i am in a small minority of people who flash roms and such, which is why we get to try the newest beta before most people get it through purchasing a phone with whatever version it comes with. Pretty much the point of my post is that new swype sucks, and they need to fix it. Not sure how you dont get that. I mean what right does anyone have to complain about anything if were going by what you think?

And to anyone who has the newest version. Try swyping from ? to space bar and see how many times you actually get a ? Its absolutely killing me.

didn't say that you don't have the right to complain, just that there is the possibility of using the older version which they have left there - something they didn't do before, so there's no REASON to.

But I'm sure they'll iron out the issues.

So there's no reason to complain about them changing their program to something that is awful? Can i go to swypes website and choose the older version? no

Just like people are upset about windows 8 and the mess it looks to be, this is pretty much the same situation. And you pretty much did say that. Where did they leave this version for me to use?

Also, I didn't say it was awful, I feel it has gone back in some ways, and forward in others. And text prediction CAN help while swyping, if it has to choose between two words, it can use context to predict which word it meant. Now it's too early to know how well it does that, but it might have potential.

im using the SGS2 on ATT running AOKP (in my sig)

Ill try, but ive never had luck installing anything but doing an install from swype.com/get or whatever it is. anything else wouldnt work. I hope your right, but im not getting my hopes up.
