UT99: a decent game but inferior to Quake 3 for deathmatch, and I don’t care about other modes.

UT2003/UT2004: an average game at best. Everything about it - from the guns to the maps to the movement - felt “off”.

Unreal 3: feels decent and visceral again, but there aren’t many deathmatch maps that I like. The weapons also look nice a gritty instead of the "plastic" equipment UT2003/UT2004 gave us.

Anyone remember how poorly the net code was when Unreal was first launched? It was absolutely awful. Epic was slow to get it fixed properly and everyone assumed it was because they were trying to get UT-99 out the door and that took all their resources. I lost a bit respect for Epic back then because of that. Kinda felt like they were saying "Yeah, its bad but we got a new game coming down the pipe so we won't fix the old one".

They ended up getting it straightened out before UT99 launched.

You know, I'm inclined to agree with you. I absolutely loathe UT style play in tactical shooters like COD (those people ruin the game), so why I'm 100% fine with it in UT, I have no idea... Just because it's Unreal Tournament?

its because it has its own style, somthing different from other slow paced games

Well Unreal Tournament had special significance to me because of it's holdover Unreal elements. I also loved the ambiance of maps like Condemned - that city theme from the intro (loved that UT3 brought that back in Heatray etc.). But UT2003/04 didn't really have.... blah

Actually yeah, it's largely about the art and environments for me. I like the diversity. The alien planets, spacescapes, even the Egyptian themed maps.

yeap same here, Egyptian themed maps and those high skyscraper maps with low gravity were so much fun.
used to love assault on convoy map also
