Why do people do this? You don't understand about computers, but wanna drop a shit ton of money on a computer.

I know that any time you wait a month something bigger and better will come out in the computer world but since I won't buy until at least mid month I have some time to wait.

oh and what about that monitor? I can buy that now since I'll use it for my old computer anyways so does anyone have anything to say about it? (24" Samsung SyncMaster 245BW)

Why not go for twin 24's or a 30-inch LCD monitor for this build? Seems silly to spend 10% of your budget on the part you will be looking at the most...

just my $0.02!

I agree with the 30" monitor option. I'm surprised I didn't think about it earlier, but I was focused on the rest of the project. If you have the space, you should definitely go with the 30" monitor & never look back.

with unlimited money i'd get 3 x 30in displays and something along the lines of 8 cores, 32gb, lots of hdd's, some very low-noise cooling solutiong, blu-ray burning, and some home theater speakers. + some other i dont feel like typing since I DONT SEE ANY ULTRA HIGH END RIG coming out of this thread anytime soon.

Basically, if two makers build a MB based on the same chipset, they should bench very very close to each other. Unless one of the makers tweaks the FSB up 1 or 2MHz.

hey, got a link confirming this? i'm interested
I know I've read it in MB reviews from Tomshardware before.
But searching that site isn't the easiest thing to do. X-bit Labs is very good at listing those type of statistics.
Even though I remember Asus being mentioned before, it looks like plenty of makers "tweak" their boards to try and get an edge...
* 2003 roundup
* 2002 roundup

X-bit Labs does a good job of explaining issues like this. I wish all hardware review sites would move in that direction.

1. I will post pics as soon as it happens but it will be in a few weeks

2. who posts in threads before reading them?

3. about the 30 inch screen, I like 24 inches for gaming. seems like I have to look around if the screen is too big. (and it has to fit in a dorm)

If you got that much money to spend on a computer, might as well go with Intel's Skulltrail. Get some phased cool equipment and you maybe able to run 8 cores at 5.0 ghz. That's probably the biggest e-pxxxx you can ever have.

That's silly. 3x 30 inch displays would be wasted on gaming.

8 cores also, especially since this (and 32 gigs of ram) requires an FB-DIMM platform, which is much slower than DDR2 / DDR3.

Obviously Blu-Ray burning is great. High end home theater is a whole different world where the sky really is the limit in terms of prices. Let's focus on one thing.

I think it's sill to make any decisions until the 9800GTX comes out. It's a major event, and is worth waiting for - unlike a new stepping CPU or a slightly better motherboard.

I imagine SLI 9800GTX on a 790i board, with a very fast quad, 8 gigs of ddr2, and a very strong PSU in a very large, well cooled case are the foundations of an ultra high end gaming rig.

Storage is another beast. If you want to start getting extreme, look at 15k RPM SAS drives and SAS RAID controllers. You can get some real improvements there, though the $/gb goes into deep space. Useful for the OS / Apps volume, that's about it, unless you do some seriously I/O limited stuff.

And a proper RAID controller with a 128mb cache and PCIe x4 interface should be _really_ fast.

Raptors are deprecated these days...

A good sound card like the Xonar D2 or the high end HT Omega stuff are also very nice. Unless you just use headphones - then a dedicated S/PDIF transport -> dedicated DAC -> and dedicated headphone amp will give you audiophile bliss. I use an E-MU 0202 USB and Sennheiser HD580s, and the sound quality blows away any onboard or discrete PCI sound card I've ever heard. Again, let's not get carried away, since we're trying to focus on the PC.

Spend a lot of money on your monitor. I really cant stress this enough. The interface is _everything_.

Also consider getting a very nice place to use your PC. A good desk, chairs, all ergonomic and adjustable makes a huge difference when you use your PC a lot. So does good lighting, and a color calibrator for your display.

Silent computer is a good computer IMO, so you can sure spend a lot there. My setup is pretty much silent, but the P180 is a little tight on space IMO.
