WASHINGTON - The U.S. government updated its dietary guidelines Wednesday, telling Americans to reduce their calorie intake and exercise 30 to 90 minutes a day in order to lose weight.

The U.S. departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services issued the guidelines, but gave few details.

"Eating fewer calories while increasing physical activity are the keys to controlling body weight," the guidelines say.

The guidelines, based on the recommendations of a panel of 13 doctors and scientists, will be used to update the U.S. food pyramid for the first time since it was introduced 12 years ago.

In the new guidelines, the government advises eating whole grains, such as whole wheat bread, rather than refined ones, such as white bread and bagels.

It also recommends eating whole fruits and vegetables rather than their juice, five to 13 servings a day, or about 4½ cups.

The panel also recommended a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate exercise, such as brisk walking or gardening, every day.
What more details do people need???

Stop drinking sugar-filled soft drinks and eating Cheetos and Twinkies while sitting on your fat ass watching the latest Ben Affleck film you just picked up from Blockbuster after waiting 3 minutes in a fast-food drive thru because you're too fvcking lazy to walk 18 feet from a parking spot to the counter! :|

*sigh*

It pains to think that not only do Americans need to be told this, but many of them will reject this notion because it involves self-discipline and work. God forbid anyone actually does any exercise? Nooo, they'd much rather fill up on bacon and low-carb cheeseburgers.

Actually, I think they are wrong... people should be entitled to sit around and do nothing while eating fast food and haagan daz... it is the governments job to pay all the health care costs for them when they get heart disease, and other related illnesses.

Sheesh!

They're waiting for liposuction to drop to $29.95 or an Ephedra replacement.

Good, now that the US government made this scientific breakthrough, maybe they can get back to work on reducing government pork. Here's an idea: Spend less and exercise restraint!

Relax everyone.... That study only cost us taxpayers a couple billion. No big deal.

Let the fat bastards eat themselves to death, and the smokers to smoke themselves to death. Common sense can go a long way.

Not nearly as much as it costs to keep us in Iraq for one day, I'd bet.

This gets updated every five years, but (obviously) common sense regarding diet and exercise doesn't change all that much so I can see why it sounds redundant.

People will just continue to ignore it anyway.
