New type of broadband

Will need to see it in practice, especially with multiple users in the same neighborhood at the same time, but looks promising.
 
They need to do something so rural people can get high speed internet aside from making urban people pay for it like we paid for them to get phones lines and electricity.

Depending on what you consider "high-speed" some WISPs are able to offer 25+mb connections. Our local one does.
 
This is the "technology" for such speeds.

What broadband carrier is planning on using this technology and how is that technology being connected to the rest of the internet? (you know, actual transit/backbone/peering arrangements)
 
LOL, it's DSL over <500m loop. How is this anything new?

70k for a neighborhood gateway to make it work. Another article estimated one gateway could cover 1 mile. Sounds more like uverse but faster speeds.

The issue has always been the last mile into the house. You can only push those telco twisted pair cables so far.
 
I always wondered why not much effort has gone into improving speeds over copper and if it was because we simply maxed out the physical capability of it. DSL typically maxes out at around 12Mbps and you have to have a very good phone line with extremely low capacitance. Like practically within a couple km from the CO. Wonder how this service will be different and capable of breaking the barrier. DSL is also designed to allow voice through at same time though, as it uses a different frequency, so if you don't care about voice I imagine you can use a bigger spectrum.

I forget what kind of speeds you can get over a Conklin. Those are basically DSL but at like 360 volts. They are used to extend copper for long distances.

Its because of costs. What they would have to charge for 5mb service wouldn't be competitive.
 
lol if this requires to put in gateways everywhere then it makes it practically non viable. Still have to run a solid connection (Ex: fibre) to those gateways. If you're running fibre that far out from the CO you may as well just do the whole neighbourhood and be done. These gateways would require maintenance, battery backup, generator hookups for extended outages etc... and it would end up being cheaper in the long run to just do fibre to the home.
