New TV: 36" Sony Flatscreen or 40"+ Projection?

I'm in the market to buy a new tv, and I'm undecided as to get a 36" Sony Flat, or a larger projection tv. I'm looking to spend about $1500 tops, including delivery fees (it'd be sweet if I could get delivery thrown in for free). I'm going to pay cash, don't want to put anything else on my cards, and I have the cash ready. Also, what is WEGA? Is that a must if I decide to get the Sony? What should I look for in projection, as far as features go? I know a lot of you have done a lot of wheeling and dealing in buying your tv's, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you are looking for an HD Wega, retail on those sets is $1799 for a 36". You can get alot more bang for your buck if you ask me. All Sony tube sets are Wegas now, unless you are talking XBR, but thats a whole different story.

If you want a good TV in the $1500 range, look at the Toshiba 51H83. Its a good set and can be had for around $1500. If you are absolutely set on Sony, you can pick up a 46" for $1599, but you will still need to buy a stand.

What size room is this going in? Is viewing angle going to be an issue?? (are you going to be looking at the TV from the side alot?)

That's like saying 'Trinitron' is just a brand name. The technology behind those trademarks DOES mean something... REALLY!

"what did BostonRedSox DO to make you hate him" would probably work better.

sorry...typing and watching America's Most Wanted at the same time.

Anyhoo...the OP sounded like he wanted to get a good set, not a disposable one like that Apex.

Well, I live in a condo, and the way the living room is laid out doesn't leave me many options on where to put the tv, which is why I'm debating the 36" to the larger projection. I can either have it against the wall, so I'm looking at it straight on, kittycornered by the fireplace, so the entire living room is able to see it. Either way, I don't think angle will be an issue.

It's funny, I was at Sears today, and they had two 36" Sony Flatscreens, one was Wega ($949.00) and the other wasn't ($850.00). That's why I asked what the difference was. I was in a hurry so I wasn't able to ask any of the salespeople.

But really, what's the difference between a 27" Sony Wega and a 27" Panasonic Tau, of course there are differences, but really, not many that make one more superior than the other.

Haha. Apex is always on sale the day after Thanksgiving at Circuit City when they basically want to get rid of their crap they haven't sold all year.

Those were both Wegas. The more expensive was probably the KV36FV210, the cheaper one was the KV36FS100. Neither of which are HD. The HD 36" Sony to get is the KV36HS510. Really nice set, but overpriced. If you want a 36" HD tube set, check out the Toshiba Cinema Series. It retails at the same price as the Sony, but if you haggle, you can get it much cheaper.

I tried a couple of 36" flat screens, but to tell you the truth the picture wasn't that good. I wound up buying a 43" Sony projection TV and I really like it.

Another vote for a Panny Tau over a sony. If you get the sony, you may want to seriously consider getting an extended warranty

I was looking at Sonys at BB today, and I noticed the same thing. Two very similar models that are $100 difference in price. So, are the KV36FV210 and KV36FS100 just different model years, or is there something intrinsically different about the two?

I'd go with like what was mentioned ealier - something like the Toshiba 50" or so HDTV projection.

I wouldn't buy the Sony flatscreen for two reasons
1) You wouldn't get me to touch a Sony product with a 10 foot pole
2) The damn thing weighs some insane weight like 350 pounds. Not exactly something I'd want to lug up the stairs :\

Don't get Sony, Toshiba or Panasonic. You can probably get a 47-52 inch widescreen projection for 1500.

Why not get any of those brands?

BostonRedSox- The difference between those 2 models of Sony's is that the V series has picture in picture. There are some other small differences, but that is the big one.

you'll get A LOT better picture with a projection and larger to boot.

direct view TVs just can't compete with a good RPTV.

Neither.

I would never get Sony. They are the absolute worst in quality and their customer service is the bottom of the barrel.

I had a $2,700 top of the line 36XBR400 HDTV go bad on me in less than 2 years. Sony's answer? Tough luck. Would have cost me $1,000 to get it fixed because Sony used sh!tty components which have been shown to go bad in around 2 years time. I just dumped it and moved on.

I used to love Sony and practically all my electronics are Sony but this is not the first time they've hosed me. No Sony ever again.

If you want to see how poorly Sony treats their customers look at this thread on AVS Forum on the notorious Grand Wega III. Their latest top of the line TV that has had many problems.

Do projection TVs suffere from some sort of burn-in or fading of the image over time? Every older projection TV I've ever seen seems dim and blurry. I don't know if that's because it's old technology, or if the TV degrades.

I was looking at this 43" Samsung DLP projection TV yesterday. It's only about 40"x30"x16" and weighs 70lbs. We're talking about Sony, Toshiba, and Panasonic... any opinions on Samsung?
