Nothing like gluing on tires:D
They're definitely not as popular as they used to be.....even for race wheels since clinchers are so much better and lighter than they used to be. You'll still see them though on some race wheels and definitely on the velodrome since they're so light.

They do roll and corner wonderfully, but glueing them on is a beee-otch.

I had both tubulars & clinchers, not a huge amount of difference, @ least to me...

With most roads so crappy, I like my Trek Mtn bike a lot:D

Wish my kids rode more, I'd love to build some bikes, even grabbed a Minoura work stand this winter, with a clamp & everything...

Trust me.....clinchers today are 99% as good as most tubies. The pros wouldn't ride them if they weren't. The technology with the casings and rubber compounds is such now that they have a very compliant ride and corner well to boot for the most part. I'd probably ride tubulars if I had a full-time mechanic to mount them for me, but the pain-in-the-ass factor is just to high to deal with them for the most part.

I can never go back to tubies after I had one roll off at about 40 MPH on a rented track bike at Hellyer Park Velodrome in San Jose. It was the front tire, and I flew facefirst into concrete when I lost traction (I was straightening out after diving down the track in a match sprint). I am lucky to be alive. Ow!

Out of curiousity: have you ever tried 177.5mm cranks (seeing how you must be pretty lanky to ride such a big frame)? I have several over-six-feet buddies that switched a while back and won't go back. Not a great idea if you're a "spinner", but the extra leverage is handy otherwise.

I have not. Honestly I rode an MTB seriously before road biking, and have always been accustomed to 175s. I know Indurain, who is an inch shorter than me, won 5 TdFs on 180s, and I might really like 177.5s, but I am wary of experimenting with very costly cranks that could be tough to resell. I may need a new set for my DeRosa (I stripped out most of the dust-cap threads on my old right-hand Athena crank by trying to remove it with the washer still in place - d'oh!), so I will probably try getting some used 177.5s or 180s just to experiment. I'm sure I could sell my 10-speed Record 175s for a good price if I fall in love with the longer crank.

They'll be here in a week or two. I'm waiting on my stupid yearly bonus to arrive. It's about a month late this year thanks to some typical gov't red tape BS.

Your raise isn't enough to cover it, along with the retro check?
