As most of you know, my main non-nerdly hobby is bicycles. After many months spent squirrelling away money from various contract lab jobs, etc I finally had enough to purchase the road bike of my dreams. Just got off the phone with Steelman Cycles.

Placed an order for their SR 525 road frame/fork that will look almost identical to this one when completed. Same powder coat color, decals and carbon fork but different components.

Christmas arrived in April this year for me. :D

EDIT- 5/1/03- they just called me and said the frame will ship tomorrow!! Christmas in May!! :D

Update 5/08/03- Frame and fork just arrived!! Gorgeous!! I can't wait to ride this thing!! :D :D

Pic of my new baby. :D

(Yes, my digcam sucks. I'm aware of this. :p )

5/20/03- My box of components arrived yesterday. Much to my surprise, they shipped me a box full of Campagnolo Record stuff (the top of the line grouppo) instead of the Chorus (the second to top of the line grouppo). I nearly passed out when I opened the box. This stuff is gorgeous....lots of carbon-fiber and titanium bits. Functionally, it's more or less the same as Chorus, but it's a bit lighter and a whole lot prettier. :D

Rear derailleur.

Bottom bracket.

Shifter/Brake levers

Steel/titanium cassette. :D

I'm having a local shop press in the headset and cut the fork steerer tube to the correct length now. Should be able to put it all together on Thursday or Friday. I'll mooch a real digcam from my neighbors and post pics of the completed product this weekend. :)

Sweet bike. :D

I should be getting my Jake back soon...I've been bummed every day I ride the bus to work since it got wrecked. :( The fork should be in stock this week and will be ready by next week. :p

Those are zircal....a super-spiffy aluminum alloy. Aerodynamic (thanks to the bladed profile) and very light.

Congrats, we all know how it feels to order and receive a new toy. :) How much does a bike like that cost? Bikes are something I know nothing about...

Should be about 18 pounds or so once I build the frame up. Not to shabby considering it's a steel frame.

strong too... every read a book called the "The Bicycle Wheel?" heheh read it and you can put cycling back into the nerdy category! Describes the engineering priniciples that give wheels their strength. Problem with too few spokes is that it encourage deformation, and once that happens, the wheel collaspes. I bet zircal is much stronger than the spokes he did his tests on.

Wow.

Hope you enjoy it though. :)
Yeah, handmade frames aren't cheap......that's for sure. I'm rationalizing the purchase by reminding myself it's been 8 years since I bought a new road bike. ;)

$1090? Is that all?

I want a road bike to go with my i-Drive, I've been looking in the $1500-$2K range.

[EDIT]Was that just the frame?[/EDIT]

I already have most of the other stuff that will go on the frame (including the pedals), so I'm just buying the frame and fork.

Yup, just the frame (although I upgraded to the Reynold Ouzo Pro carbon fork). A complete bike with the components I want (Campagnolo Chorus) would be about $2500-2600 or so dependin on options.

Hmm I see that it IS just the frame. I'm bicycle stupid, sorry. :)

Although I think the fork is 300 extra. so call it 1400?
