News flash - Canada is not England. We do not put a "Jerry" of "Petrol" in our "Auto" - we put a tank of gas in our car.

;)

Anyhow, the whole power-draw thing pisses me off. Not because I'm a tree-hugging, save-the-whales hippie dumbass - but because a big-watt PSU requirement seriously cramps the potential for a quiet and powerful system.

You don't have to make the trade-off, you can run a 9800Pro with a Zalman on it and a 350 psu.
Life is about compromises, nothing is perfect. The girl with the best rack might have the worst personality. The house with the best view might not have a basement because it's on the water. The car that passes best due to most horsepower has bad traction because it's light in the back and has too much torque. Etc ad infinitum.
No point in bitching about it.
In this case, if you want the best gaming, deal with the case noise. If the R420 is quieter, performs a bit less and doesn't require the big psu, buy that if your priority is case noise.

Personally, coming from 5800 Ultra in a case with 4 fans, I think the 6800 will be a step toward quieter for me. (assuming it beats whatever ATI puts out and I get one)

Hey, if someone comes out with a 550w that makes no noise and Zalman makes copper-heatpiping for the next-gen coolers, I'll be happy with that. But as you well know (being the owner of a 5800U) sometimes companies throw silence to the wind and produce dustbusters. Are "bigger, slower, equally efficient fans" that foreign of a concept? :p

Oh, and anyone who uses horsepower as the benchmark for a car probably has more decals than paint coverage. ;)

The point was that everything is a tradeoff, not that horsepower is the best benchmark for a car.

I drive a very conservative 2002 Silverado Extended cab with a car seat in back, not an orange 69 charger with the stars n bars on the roof. The only reason I care about horsepower is I tow my boat.

But it *is* two slots, unless you think nestling a PCI card right against that HSF won't hurt airflow at all. There's nothing inherently wrong with two-slot coolers, IMO, but this one seems to exhaust (140W of) heat into the case. I'd much prefer a VGA Silencer dealy, with heat exhausted out the back. (HIS is promising a new version of the IceQ for R420.)

Pete, you could buy a Abit 5900 for the OTES and use that.

But youre thinking that most people have more than 2 or 3 PCI cards... which isnt true.

However the 2 slot solutions definately effect everyone using SFF systems.
