I did see that it was an online game, and I assumed it also had a single player option: Battlefield 2 is also an online game, but it also has a single player option. Sorry if you find it hard to believe, but it was an honest oversight. I'll know to check more thoroughly next time.

You will get very bored of BF 2 very fast if you only play single player. You cannot even play all the available maps that come with the game in single player mode. If you want you can start your own LAN server with only you on it to get access to those other maps but then there will be no computer AI enemies to fight. BF 2 really is an online game with a single player option thrown in as an afterthought mostly just for practice and familiarization.

From what he was expecting from WoW, guild wars would probably be better for him than WoW. Since he can hire NPCs to quest with him and everything is instanced so he can avoid other players while questing and get a more single player experience out of it.

Don't be suckered into thinking Guild Wars is any more free than any other MMORPG. You might not have to pay for a subscription to play but you will have to pay to buy the additional content releases. If you don't buy them, you will be left behind with old obsolete equipment as better stuff comes out in the content patches and everybody who DOES buy the content patches kicks your butt. It's just the subscription model for WoW where you get unlimited access to the servers and all content vs. the pay for content model of Guild Wars. Either way you will pay.

[EDIT] At least with the WoW subscription model you can opt to pre-pay many months at a time and thus get a cheaper bulk discount. If you opt to prepay for 6 months of access, the monthly fee drops from 15 to like 12 bucks or something. the free month they give you at the beginning should be enough time to decide if you want to do that.

That's the case with me too. I started playing WoW mid february and I haven't bought a single game since. I bought Sims 2 and Farcry when I bough WoW and I probably have played less than 5 hours of each, compared to the more than 300 hours of WoW I've logged so far.

Me too. BF 2 was actually the first game I bought ever since I bought WoW back in February.
