RECENT DOCUMENTS:
Right-click on Start menu
Click properties
On Start Menu Tab, click on Customize
On Advanced Tab, click on "Clear List"

Actually, that will clear the recently opened programs, not the recently opened documents.
Right click the taskbar -> Properties -> Start Menu tab -> Customize -> Advanced -> Clear List
Unchecking the "List my most recently opened documents" will disable this feature.

Actually, NO, my instructions clear the documents just fine. In fact, you listed the same exact steps that I did (with the exception that I started by right clicking the start menu and you right-clicked the taskbar, but whatever). You might want to read my post again, this time with the steps in bold and compare the sequence to your post:

RECENT DOCUMENTS:
Right-click on Start menu
Click properties
On Start Menu Tab, click on Customize
On Advanced Tab, click on "Clear List"

See? We were both correct in our instructions.

Here's how to remove the Documents folder from the Start menu:

Start the Registry Editor
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer
Right-click an open area in the right pane and select New > DWORD Value
Name it NoRecentDocsMenu
Double-click this entry and add the value 1
Exit RegEdit and restart Windows
To reverse just change the value back to 0

couldnt you just download tweakui from microsoft and essentially do that easier than having to hack the registry?

planktonHas the right idea. TweakUI (from Microsoft and FREE) has a "paranoia" section that lets you clear a number of different things at log off without ever having to resort to regedit.

It and Microsofts other free PowerToys can be downloaded here.
