New to Verizon, need suggestions

Which phone to buy

  • HTC Thunderbolt

  • Samsung Droid Charge

  • LG Revolution

Switching from AT&T next week to get in on Verizon's unlimited 4G before it goes away and my area recently got it. I had the Inspire 4G on AT&T and dont really have complaints but my family calls more to Verizon and since I bought the Inspire out right I'll be making the change.

I'm looking definitely for a 4G phone and thankfully there are enough to my liking to choose from! I really just want opinions from Anandtech. I'm leaning more towards Droid Charge because of battery but the other two offerings are still good. Which would you choose?
 
The phones are not free, but cheap.
I like the Charge because it has hard menu buttons, something I wish was more common on smartphones these days.
But the Thunderbolt is MUCH more likely to acquire and keeps its 4g signal. Of course it also has shitty battery life so plan on getting a spare and a standalone charger.

I think I may have to go with Thunderbolt for sole fact that its cheaper and I dont want to pay 200 for droid charge.

Yes thats cheaper but you really need to keep up with what we are talking about.
At those prices you should get what you want, not what you have to.
Remember you are going to be stuck with it for two whole years. That will probably cost you a grand total of 2500 dollars versus 2450. Not really a huge difference.

One thing I liked about AT&T is that I switched GSM phones pretty often and just bought phones at full price. How would it work on Verizon.
 
This whole things got me thinking Sprint now because of the family. My parents dont use data but dad still wants email and I cant justify 30 bucks a month for a man who uses maybe 50 mb a month but still talks for 3000 minutes to mobile.
 
The TB is the better choice right now, haven't seen anything on the modification scene on the Revolution yet. The Charge is a flimsy plastic junk, as noted in its reviews. Guess if you just want to grandfather in unlimited 4G though, get the cheapest.
 
Either one would be fine, were I buying today, I'd likely go for the Charge as it has HDMI out, better battery life, and the screen is better in sunlight.

Sprints actually worse. At least with Verizon you can add data to an individual line on a family plan. With Sprint it's all or nothing. Either you pay for everyone to have data or no one does. I vote Thunberbolt. Recent years have convinced me Samsung cannot build a phone without major issues, I won't touch one.
 
If I had to pick today, I'd get the Samsung Droid Charge.
LG Revolution is the worst of the three listed IMO.

Basically it boils down to Sprint is better if you want everyone to have a smartphone with lots of data and texting, but Verizon is better if you want some lines to have limited or no data or texting.

If your dad just wants to get his email you might save some money by getting him a feature phone with the $10/mo data plan (75 MB). With Sprint you may as well just get him a full smartphone.
