Hi, I'm new to the forum. A few of my guy friends are members and they told me this was the best place to ask questions. So here goes =) I'm looking to buy a DVD burner. I read the recently posted thread by dynasty about good dvd burners but I'm afraid I'm a little in over my head. Could anyone explain to me in simple terms the basics I need to know before buying one? And also if anyone has any recommendations? In case you're wondering, I'll probably have a friend help me install it =) Thanks!

To start, basically there are 2 popular types of DVD Burners + and - You can get one which will do both. I suggest the Pioneer A06.

Welcome to the forums :)

The main thing to decide is what kind of burner you want:
DVD + -- cheapest, discs are playable in 80-90% of DVD players, discs cost a little more (this may change)
DVD - -- more expensive, discs are playble in over 90% of DVD players
Dual-format -- costs more than single-format

I'm about to buy one myself and will be getting the dual-format Pioneer A06 burner for about $250 at newegg.com, but I don't mind paying more to get a brand I trust.

Welcome to Anandtech!

Also try searching the forums, most questions have already been answered.

Also check out Anandtech.com, they do lots of reviews of new technology (actually I just searched this and didnt find much on DVD's)

If you do both these things then post a question, be sur to give lots of details

BTW, what do you plan to use it for? Many people are waiting on DVD's to come down because there is not a huge use for them yet, wait a little longer and pay a lot less for a better peice of equipment.

Thanks for all your help! I really appreciate it. Any thoughts on the Pioneer A06 versus the NEC 1300A? Is the Pioneer worth the extra money?

i have used an A04, A05, and A06. i have loved all of them. unfortunately, i couldnt keep the A06 cuz i had more urgent uprgrades but i couldnt be happier with the A05. if i had the money i would go with the A06 though
