I joined TA F@H Sunday night with my 2.4GHz A64, 2.2GHz AXP, and 1.6GHZ P4, but I'm not really sure what project I should focus on. Any suggestions?

Oh, and by the way, since I started like 2 days ago, the F@H site says I've only completed 3 WUs and have a score of 298. It also says I only have 1 active processor even though I have 3. That doesn't seem like much considering I keep reading about people getting like 50 WUs a day with 4 or 5 machines. Am I doing something wrong?

did you use the same info (username/email) on each install?

are you running it as a service or?

mike

Yeah, same username (that and team number are the only user things you can configure), which the F@H site said would work. I don't know what you mean by asking if I'm running it as service.

its available in the install

running it as a service just lets it run even when no one is logged in

when you check the progress on each machine, do you see work being done?

if not
did you try restarting the machines?

I dont remember having issues with it

but if wyou want a step by step guide go here

if they aren't showing progress you might want to reinstall them.

this will run it a tad faster iirc as well

do they have internet access? and can they get thru to F@H?

hope this helps

I'm always logged on to all of my computers, so no problems there. It looks like work is being (At least on my AXP, which says it's completed 2 WU). It draws new frames and such, so I would guess so. But my A64 still hasn't completed one WU yet (237/250 right now). But yeah, I'm pretty sure they're all doing stuff. I also ran it a bit while I was messing around with Linux on my A64. (Like 6% of a WU was done, it said, after a couple hours).

They're all networked through my router that connects to my satellite modem. It may not upload the fastest (768kbps down/56kbps up) but it's still reliable (I've uploaded ~20MB files in less than an hour on it several times, so I don't doubt that much). The queue on all of them is also all clear except for the active slot.

Maybe I'll just try a different project. I wanted to do SETI, but I guess SETI is (has?) ending.

seti hasnt ended as yet

you might wait to see as you are close to completing a wu to see if it uploads

It wont give credit iirc till wu's are finished.

most folks run a few computers so all help is appreciated

I am sorry if I wasn't much help

I run my coomputers on tas and its been a few months since we ran F@H

we run each project for a month then move on, its a nice way to learn the projects as well as setup proceedures

we'd love to have you as well

as far as seti you have a choice between classic and boinc iirc (classic my be pushing new members to boinc though)

Mike
you can check out reddeyexpress or teamanandtech dc both are sites for looking over the projects

Hello Pollock! Welcome to TeAm Anandtech F@H 😀

Hey don't give up on F@H yet! You will be in my stats tonight as one of three new members for 2/22/2005:thumbsup: It sounds like 1 or 2 of your rigs got started with a big wu, these are very large units that take quite a while to complete. Turn a couple of those in and you will be quickly moving up in the stats😀 I got a large wu as my first project and almost quit too, but I am sure glad I didn't(this is one great team🙂) Hope to see you moving up in the stats soon!

-ntg

BTW: here is your current position in the stats:thumbsup:

Welcome to the TeAm, Pollock 🙂

Some work units (WUs) take a long time (days) to finish, but you get lots of points 😀 The higher point WUs take longer than low point WUs. Two 50 point WUs should take just as long to crunch as one 100 point WU.

After the other computers finish their WUs, the stats page will show more active processors.

I don't know of anybody doing 50 WUs per day with only 5 computers.

You will do quite nicely with those computer 😛

If you have enough ram (at least 256MB), you can get bonus BigWUs that are worth double points. If interested, ask and I or somebody will tell you what you need to do.

Welcome to DC 🙂

All right, I'll check back again in about an hour once my main rig completes its WU (it was the only one I checked to accept assignments larger than 5MB). My 1.6GHz P4 it only at like 888/2000 frames though, slower than it should be because it's a laptop and I lowered the CPU usage so it wouldn't catch on fire. 😛

Does SETI have smaller WUs by any chance? That's where I saw references to "50 or so WU/day."

Yeah, I'd be interested in big WUs, especially since all of my systems have at least 512MB of ram (although I do plan on acquiring a 533MHz Celeron sometime soon).

You only need to do that, if you are running more than one instance of the client on 1 machine... I have a few machines running, and they all have ID = 1. (Except for those running more than one instance of course 😉 )

Please correct me someone, if this is not the case...

You are correct Sir. Some WUs take a while to complete. Be patient and you will be rewarded 🙂. Thanks for joining TA F@H.

Different MachineIDs are only needed for multiprocessor computers or if you run more than one instance.

It takes a couple of hours for a finished WU to show up on stats page.

Good idea on lowering CPU usage on a laptop. How hard is it to change a laptop fan? 😕

If it is taking two to three days to finish that WU it is probably one of the 600 point bonus BigWUs. 😀
Assignments larger than 5 MB is what gets you the BigWUs with double points. It sometimes helps to get BigWUs all the time if you add the -advmethods flag to the shortcut that starts F@H client. To do this, right click the shortcut and select Properties. At the end of what is in the Target textbox add a space, a dash and advmethods. If you want to add another flag (-forceasm to always use optimized code) just add another space and -forceasm.

Seti Classic WUs will finish in less than 3 hours on a fast computer. One point per WU.

We have to keep reminding ourselves that it is not about points or WUs, but about what you want your computer to be working on and about what is going to give you the most satisfaction and happiness 😉

Have fun!

It took me a while to understand about all the IDs in F@H 😕 😉 😉

buhu?

boo hoo!

😀

@Pollock
How do you like satellite net connection?
Looks like I will soon be getting satellite web and TV, what can you tell me that I need to know before shopping?

For the TV part, make sure to get a DirecTV TiVo. TV hasn't been any better since I got mine in August 🙂.

I've had no problems with DirecTV so far. I actually like getting my local channels that way, because my reception is awful.

Direcway on the other hand, isn't so great. It's better than dialup, but I would exhuast all other options first. Especially since during prime hours (like 5-9PM) everything gets awful. I can't upload 80KB, for example, without it timing out. The F.AP (I don't know why that's a censored word) usually doesn't bother me much (I just run GetRight overnight at 11KB/s and stop it in the morning when downloading Linux CDs), but the unavoidable latency really sucks too. All I can say is that it's nice to be able to network it and share a relatively large pool of bandwidth with my family, as well as being much more reliable than my old dialup connection (weather rarely is a problem). But yeah, Direcway just isn't that good, especially since you get locked into a 15 year contract. I'd look at WildBlue if I were you which should be coming online in June or so, or maybe Starband. But not Direcway. I guess you could look at the BBR sat forum for more info.

Anyway, looks like all of my problems have been worked out with F@H. I kind of want to do SETI BOINC though, although the site is down right now, I guess.

Good to hear that  5 more points and you will get your first milestone 😎

There's no reason you can't do one project on a few computers and another project on others. I've done that in the past, but usually I tend to stick all of my [very limited] firepower on one project, because otherwise I don't move through the stats fast enough to keep interested (and with that said, I'm probably one of the least stats-addicted people around these parts). :Q

😀

What? He's at 1000 already?

@Pollock
Thanks for all the info! 🙂 Really appreciate it.

A local power company says that they will be offering WildBlue starting April 1. Hmmm, April Fools Day.
