i've got two computers, both with Win98se, both have D-link 10/100 NIC cards, and i'm running a crossover cable between them.
i got windows to detect and install the drivers correctly (with a little help of the driver disk)

both NICs have a led on them that tells me if it can detect something is on the other side, and both have their LEDs on so that means the physical connection isnt a problem.

i installed TCP/IP and then IPX, i set the IP address of my better computer to 192.168.0.1, subnet was 255.255.255.0. and the other computer was 192.168.0.2, with the same subnet. i made sure their bindings are correct and everything, restarted, laucnhed up network neighborhood, and it wouldnt detect each other. i wait for a while, and then my other computer (192.168.0.2) detects itself, but still not this computer, and after 45 minutes of waiting i give up, this computer doesnt even detect anything (not even itself like the other computer).

i have a cable modem currently on this computer (192.168.0.1) and its plugged in through a USB NIC.

any ideas whats wrong? i already ruled out the physical connection, i set up everything right for the TCP/IP and the computers still cant see each other, and this computer cant even see itself on the network (the other one can).

thanks in advance.

:edit:: uh ok i pinged the other computers through the command prompt, and they'll ping each other successfully (well i hope i did it rite, i did the command "ping 192.168.0.2", i'm doing it from 192.168.0.1). unfortunately, they sitll wont see each other on the network neighborhood, and this computer wont even see itself. so do i keep waiting? its been quite a while already.......

Have you installed File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks? It's done through the Network Neighborhood also.

Did you name the comupters? You shouldn't have to, but it doesn't hurt. Also try searching for the computers IP number.

Oh, and yeah, install file and printer sharing like purplehayes said. :)

yeah........ i named the computers, same workgroup too, complete with descriptions.

this netBEUI thing isnt really working.... i think i'll try tcp/ip one more time...

::edit:: ok now i'm back to where i started from...... the main computer (or this computer, has 192.168.0.1 ip) cant detect anything on network neighborhood, while the other computer can detect itself.

*** ok this might be a lead to the problem ***

i can ping the other computer (192.168.0.2) using its name that i gave it ("ibm"). so i typed "ping ibm" on command and it worked.

so i tried it on the other computer and tried to ping my computer using its name in the command. i typed "ping maincpu" and it said "unknown host maincpu".
-however, when i put in "ping 192.168.0.1" (the ip instead of the name), it works. huh?

-btw, thanks for the help so far...

At the command prompt type nbtstat -A 192.168.0.1 to see what NetBIOS is calling your computer and then try to ping that address.

Have you installed File and Print sharing?

What is your primary goal here, to share internet access or share files and a printer? We'll get one running and then worry about the other.
