Just finished putting together my new box. Which means I gotta find a use for my old piece. Wanted to install linux on it but didn't want to spend to much. Any suggestions for a first timer to linux, a free version would be great. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Ubuntu seems popular it's free and Debian-based. Be sure to read their FAQ page and check out the indicated guides in my link I put in my sig for a more adminstrator-style introduction.

Slackware is a very good distro, but IMO would not be good for someone new to linux unless they really wanted to.

I'm new myself, so I can't recommend a good distro. However as someone who toyed with the idea for over a year and downloaded a ton of different distros before finally biting the bullet I can say one thing: If you're new to Linux and not a programmer/developer it'll take some getting used to. Most of us that have been behind the Windoze for too long don't feel that comfortable at first with the text-based commands. That said, I'm starting to fall in love-so basically my advice is to pick any of the major, well-supported ones and stick with it until you know at least the basics. At least that way if you decide to switch you'll know which one you preferred and why.

Ubuntu, Fedora, SuSE, or Mandrake. Any thoughts on the types of things you'd like to accomplish with your Linux box?
