i have the tools, i just don't know how to go about it... should i just start at tiny increments and keep testing? or should i up it 100 MHZ and see if my PC doesn't crash?

i have a Sapphire 9600 pro

Little Increments. Around 10mhz each time. Then when it wont work or it crashes lower it and then raise it by 1's.

alright, i got it clocked 45 MHZ (both memory and core) before i started getting all artifact ridden... i think thats a good O/C, no? from 400/300 to 445/344... should i try to push one or the other a bit farther? or is this a nice O/C that will boost my performance, even slightly?

How many extra FPS will a moderate overclock get you in games though and is it really worth putting that extra strain on your card? (serious question).

I would start by overclocking the core to see the highest stable overclock before you start getting artifacts, then return it to stock and oc the memory. When you got an idea were both go then do them both to get the best oc for both. Use test like 3dMark03 (test 4) to see if you get any artifacting.

mitchafi to answer your question it depends on your card. If you can't overclock it much, then no it probably is not worth it. Just some cards overclock great. Most competitive gamers any little extra gain in FPS is worth it.
