New to DDR2...does it need to be installed in pairs?

ive installed DDR2 in singlets. But you should really pay the extra and get dual channel. But if your really in that much of a budget, single sticks will work fine,

however i am unsure about mixing size. ie. 1gb on one side and 512meg on the other. Someone would have to confirm on this part.

Lowest id go on a system = 512meg ram

My personal minimum

Those two should be idea choices. Personally i think any system with less then 1gb is kinda starving the system of resources. Plus i hate virtual memory. The Pqi 1gb kit is about the same price range as the 1gb single stick u showed me. If you dont intend to game, 1gb will be more then enough ram. If you game lightly, 1gb will be enough. If you WOW or Oblivion, FEAR, or BF2, better grab 2gb :X

I hope that helps.

No, it does not have to be installed in pairs.

Is there any advantage to installing it in pairs? If not, them I'm gonna go with the 1x1GB option instead of the 2x512MB option.

You lose dual channeling of the ram when you do it in singlets. Dual Channeling ram allows faster caching and reading of ram in the system. Sometimes even if you buy dual channel ram in singlets, it wont be compatible with another stick of the same brand and company. This is why you should buy dual channel ram in kits.

It's faster if it's installed in pairs. Better performance.

But you can always buy one larger stick now and one later. That way you have more room for upgrades later too if you want to get even more.

I am pretty sure that you should buy 2*512MB. The dual channel is faster and worth the money. But if you are going to add one more in the future, you can buy one stick first.

For Pentium cpu's, if you are not running dual channel, you are missing out on perforance. It's not so much that it is faster with dual channel mode, but without it, you are losing the full performance of the cpu. Pentiums are bandwidth hungry and need for the memory to run in dual channel mode to get full performance.

I strongly recommend running your memory in dual channel mode.

As of right now, 1GB of memory is beginning to get on the short side; 2GB is going to be the sweet spot in about a year or two. I guess it really depends on what you do, but for now I would recommend the 1x1GB option.
