Before I begin, let me explain, my budget is much like the latest system I bought, Barebones. This will explain why a P4 2.4 and not 3. whatever, ME not XP, MVAVE not CORSAIR, etc, etc,. But I think I put together something with potential and will get there (with some help) eventually.

My B,bones + sys?

MOBO, Abit IS7 w/865PE+ICH5R Chip Set
CPU, Intel P4 2.4c GHz
RAM, MWAVE 256MB PC3200 DIMM
DIMM, 4X 184-pin sockets (supports single/dual DDR400)
HD, WD 40GB 7200rpm 8Mb UATA 100
VIDEO, Nvidia GForce FX 5200 8X 128MB
ON BOARD, SB SATA, Raid 0, Infrared, Lan, 6 Ch Snd.
1.44 Flpy, and 52X cdrom.
FSB 800Mhz
OS, Win ME ( I know, I know?)
CASE, MID TOWER ATX

Sorry if these questions seem lame or have been asked before but I did search the Forums and FAQ first and even wrote to Mvave tech but have yet to find the ans. I need. Why do companies have tech support anyway? Most of them seem to know less than I do and that is not a good thing.

1. Can I slave the HD from my old system to the HD of the new B,bones sys. and expect to use and move files from old to the new HD or do I have to do something first. The slave HD is exactly the same kind, size, speed as the new one is, from a P III 1GB PC133 factory sys. w/factory installed ME OS. If not what do I need to do and how.
2. Can I slave a 10GB WD HD 5400rpm to the B,bones sys.? It is from an old Pentium, PC100 64MB sys. w/Win 98SE installed. (I have the 98 disk but have no idea where the installation # is and Microsoft says it?s a factory installed OS (not) and won?t give me a number, sooo we?re back to why ME, at least in part). Or could it be put in as a secondary Master?
3. Is it worth it for me to buy a converter and put two ATA 100?s in series (SATA) or is it best left to bigger ATA 150?s or so, (at least I wouldn?t need a kit)? If it is worth it and I can put the 10GB HD as a secondary Master would it be affected and or would I need a second conversion kit for that HD?
4. If the RAM DIMM?s are not equal do you still get dual ram benefits? If so is it all used? In other words if you have 256MB in one DIMM and 512MB in a second DIMM does the 256 interact w/half of the 512 or the whole stick and if it?s half, do you still get some use of the other half?
5. Is there any reason why I couldn?t use the Modem out of the Pent PC100 sys. In the B,bones sys.?
6. MWAVE put together, installed and tested the Barebones part of my new sys. Which is the MOBO, w/the CPU and chip set, in the case. In the case at the front and taped under the HD bays were two (sets of four) color coded wires which have attachment heads for the MOBO and two wires with what look like speaker jacks on them. Anyone have a clue what they are for? All the LED?s the floppy and CDROM seem to work fine the wires all come from up in and behind the case face.
7. Is the MWAVE Ram I had to have installed any good or should I be thinking
trash can ASAP?

I can?t afford a divorce, which is what I?ll get if I break any part of this machine due to stupidity, so I hope someone will take the time to help me and if you do, Thank you very much, in advance!! I?ll use the lawyer money on bigger n better goodies!

1. Can I slave the HD from my old system to the HD of the new B,bones sys......

Yes, you can without a hitch, just remember to set Master/Slave jumper accordingly.

I take it's for data again?
Once again yes you can slave it to the main HDD or put it on the secondary channel as Master or Slave.

5. Is there any reason why I couldn?t use the Modem out of the Pent PC100 sys. In the B,bones sys.?

The only thing you have to worry about if it's ISA slot and drivers.

7. Is the MWAVE Ram I had to have installed any good or should I be thinking trash can ASAP?
I have never heard good or bad about MWAVE's RAM...... I'm sure it'll work as advertised, but if you were to set more agressive memory timings or the RAM was holding you back on an o/c, then you might want to look at someone else...

That's all I can answer.... and I really didn't get #3 the HDD question. But I don't think you see any performace gains from IDE to SATA with a conversion.

The slave HD is exactly the same kind, size, speed as the new one is, from a P III 1GB PC133 factory sys. w/factory installed ME OS. If not what do I need to do and how.

Yes but you must format the drive with the ME install. Everytime a drive moves motherboards if that makes sense, it must be formatted or have the installation repaired if it has an operating system you plan on using.

Should be fine as long as it's not the primary master.

I'm confused on that one, why so many small hard drives?

Does your motherboard support this feature (I'm not sure). I don't know what the size difference will do for this.

5. Is there any reason why I couldn?t use the Modem out of the Pent PC100 sys. In the B,bones sys.?

Should work as long as there are drivers for it.

It's not front usb is it?

7. Is the MWAVE Ram I had to have installed any good or should I be thinking
trash can ASAP?

What chips are on it? If it works and you are not gonna overclock, etc. it should be fine

I can?t afford a divorce, which is what I?ll get if I break any part of this machine due to stupidity, so I hope someone will take the time to help me and if you do, Thank you very much, in advance!! I?ll use the lawyer money on bigger n better goodies!

Do me one huge stinkin favor. DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT put ME on this computer. It's like building a computer like this and hooking a 100w power supply up to it. It's not gonna work right and ME is Microsofts because POS operating system ever. Please Please Please run 98, 2k, or xp. ME will just give you headaches and make the system appear to have faulty components.

Thank you for your help MOTO, you were right on about the hard drive info!! I installed them without a hitch and without partitioning. Now I just have to learn what I can and cannot do. My hope is that I can move a great deal of the information from the slaved drives to the primary master, then put them in the other (pIII 1gig) machine.

The problem I'm having right now needs to be resolved first however. Know anything about the onboard realtek (AC 97 v2.0) 6 ch snd on the ABIT IS7 MOBO? I can't get mine to work. Heard some faint sound through the headset but thats all. I have 2 boston digital spkrs w/wolfer and headset. I saw some complaints in the ABIT forums about snd isssues w/the IS7 and another MOBO but I think they were earlier versions. I'll just keep messing with it. It's like it needs drivers or somethin but I've tried that. Oh well...

Anyway thank you very much for taking the time to help me out!! It's people like you that make the world go round. By the way the slot was wrong for the modem and I'll worry about dual ddr and serial hd's when I can hear.:)

Best to you,
JAWS

Jeff,

I just wanted to thank you for your help, I really appreciate it!!

I may have to partition at some point, but at least the HD's are installed and I think I can do some of what I want to do. It's just a data thing for now. You were right... those wires taped inside the front were USB and the other was an audio and mike jack to run thru the case and plug in the back if you want to use the front mike and headset ports. Is that wiered or what. I guess thats what you get w/the economy case.

Anyway thank you very much for your help. Sorry I was so late with my answer I was out of town. Now, if I could just get the sound to work, I would be a happy camper!!

Thanks again,

foofoo,

You and amdskip both warned me not to use Win ME on this system and I know you are right. However, because of a bunch of circumstances I'm sure you wouldn't care to read about, for the time being, I am forced to use what I got, and ME is what I got.

So far there have been no problems but then I really haven't taken the system to task either. Anyway, thank you for the warning, you can be sure I will do something about it when I can. I should say I have a sound problem but I'm sure thats not Windows.

Thanks,
JAWS
